Performer 11 boxed version - What's in the box?

Post by Tim Ripley »

What's in the box? No dealer that I've asked can tell me. Is there a printed manual? A CD? Just a pamphlet and a download link? It's been years since I've bought the boxed version, but I like having a printed manual...

You might have to ask MOTU; I don't know if anyone around this parts has added to their collection of speaker stands (otherwise known as printed manuals) in the last few years.

I will say, the pdf manual that is accessible directly from within DP (Help menu)is searchable. This is a good thing.

No printed manual since DP8. I don't think there is a boxed version anymore. Lots of trees and furry animals are grateful. Manual here:

There is indeed a boxed version available for DP 11. That's why I was asking what was in it. Just curious really. I usually use the PDF manual too.

In the boxed versions of DP 9 and 10, there is a Quick Start Guide and your Key Code. I don't recall if there's a CD but I can open mine and check. There's no serial number—it is given with your first registered version (2.71 in my case) and does not change.

If an Upgrade and bought from a 3rd party, there is (was?) a mailer that you sent to MOTU to register it to your account or instructions to Register online. This is required for Tech Support and additional downloads such as the latest UVI Player and 3rd party libraries.

I did not bother getting the box with DP 11. In fact, I see that I never did open the one I got with my 10 Upgrade from MOTU—since I ordered it directly, it was already registered.

Hahaha... Yep. It seems silly to still offer the box.

A DVD if anything, not a CD, but even that would be pointless. You still need an internet connection to licence it, to do updates, and to get the sound lib.

A printed manual is also of doubtful value. What if MOTU had printed the DP Lite manual? We’d need lots of markers and sticky notes.

A printed manual is clearly of doubtful value to you, :D but you cannot make that blanket statement for everyone else. I mentioned liking one in my OP. It's of value to me. I like to read it. I agree though, in this age, that printed materials in general are on the wane.

It’s use to anyone declines as the software is updated and the manual is not, which is what you’d have to expect.

A 1000 page printed manual—that’s how big it is—that cannot be easily searched is 1/2 step above useless. Searchable pdf files are the best thing that have happened to User Guides.

But, if you want to print the User Guide, go ahead. It’s only one ream of paper… plus another half ream for the Plug-ins Guide… plus the Quick Start Guide…

How many of us remember the original manual set the size of a cinder block that shipped 25 years ago?

I do!
Yikes, that is a long time ago.
Something reassuring about all of those booklets.

That said...
I'm happy to have a searchable digital manual with current updates.

I salute the OP for a great question.
Why would there be a boxed version?
And echoing James/Brad... "What's in the box?"  :D
All is well

If it came with one of those cool, black MOTU T-shorts (specify size), I'd get the box.

Hopefully not Gwyneth Paltrow's... ummm... head. That was a good movie, though!
