Exporting MIDI tracks playing device groups

Post by Killahurts »

I have a single MIDI track playing a device group on its output, let's say 12 virtual instruments, each assigned to channel 1 of the instrument. If I export that single track as a MIDI file, and then import it into another document, the track has the problem of being composed of 12 stacked notes, one directly on top the other. i.e. you pick a single note and delete it, and there's another identical note underneath it, x12. It causes loudness, voice-robbing, etc. I could never edit that clean, because it would mean removing thousands of notes manually.

Instead the fix is to select the track again for export, but first, temporarily reassign the track's output from the device group, to a single output, e.g. a piano. Then it only exports one note, per note.

That’s interesting. Tells us that DP exports not just what’s in the track, but what the track is going to play, like it does with audio tracks.

Yeah, we have that MIDI/audio consistency thing in DP. I love it, but in this case it's kind of a kludge because who would ever want to export a file that did that?

Not a big deal, because you can use the above fix.. but I can see how it could stump some poor DP user, as there's no visual way to know the events are stacked, unless you delete one.

Maybe they say something about it in the manual.. but how would I know about that?

I’ve read two earlier versions of the manual, now plodding through V11, but don’t recall seeing this mentioned. What happens is a logical extension of how DP works, but an inset in the manual pointing this out is certainly warranted. Clever of you to find it.
