Slate FG-X... can't change Presets when DP11 RESOLVED!

Post by James Steele »

Exactly what the topic says. Disappointed to find out that still one of my favorite Mastering compressors, Slate FG-X, is unable to let me choose or change presets when DP is running in AS-native mode. I'm assuming it will work if I run DP in Rosetta 2, but who wants to do that?

I remember when a major rewrite to FG-X was promised, and it never really materialized. They made it 64-bit Intel, but I doubt it will become AS native. Maybe Slate has a newer product that supersedes this? I'll have to poke around on their site, but this is kind of a bummer. Really like this plug.

Re: Slate FG-X... can't change Presets when DP11 running AS Native

Haven't tried this yet, but seems like on workaround would be to launch DP in Rosetta mode, open FG-X and then recall each preset one at a time from its GUI, and then save each one from the preset menu in the upper left of DP's plug-in window. You can then use that as a way to change presets when running DP native. Haven't tested this theory yet, but I'm thinking it will work.

OKAY... I have to come back here with a *little* egg on my face.

The issue is fixed. As some of you know I did a clean install of everything on my Mac Studio and apparently what happened is that when I ran the FG-X installer I downloaded again from Slate, somehow the presets folder did not get installed.

If you go to the directory:

<Macintosh HD>/Library/Application Support/Slate Digital/FG-X Virtual Master Console/Presets/

... you should have a folder inside there called "Slate Digital" in which are the FG-X preset files.

I did NOT have that. Apparently when I did the fresh install of FG-X, that folder was not installed... just a folder called "Steven Slate" containing preset files that are not seen by FG-X. So I went into a clone of my MacPro5,1 boot drive, and found the "Slate Digital" folder and copied it over, and lo and behold I have my FG-X presets... and it behaves exactly as it should, even when DP is running in AS native mode!

So just wanted to pass that on. If you install FG-X from the installer you download on the Slate site, it may not install the default presets like it should. Just be on the lookout. It's really nice to have FG-X back. Even though it's not likely to go Apple Silicon native, I still really like it a lot.

As a follow up, I did move one of the presets in the "Steven Slate" folder over into the "Slate Digital" folder and then FG-X did indeed show that preset in it's preset selection dropdown menu. So I copied the rest of the presets over, but changing between then doesn't seem to make any change, so I'm going to just move them back into the other folder and leave them there. Ozone 9 Elements is actually sounding better on this particular track anyway. :)
