(Small) Meter Plugin Recommendation?

Post by Rick Cornish »

Looking for a small (as in screen real estate) peak/RMS meter plugin I can leave open all the time to monitor how hard I'm hitting my master buss. Something pretty tiny that I can stick up in one corner where it'll be out of the way, but visible when I need it.

I have bx_Meter and PSP Triple Meter, which I use a lot, but—since they're not re-sizable—I can't afford to leave them open all the time as they take up too much screen area.

I tried detaching the meter bridge and re-sizing it, which works to a point, but it gives me the output level of the buss when what I need is the input level. It also moves around every time I close the project or DP, so a plugin would be better.

Any ideas?

Additional monitors are so inexpensive that, if you have the desk space, might be something to consider. Templates in DP remember where where things go in multiple monitor setups.

FWIW, this plugin crashes DP 10 (last update) on High Sierra (last update) on my MBP. I have another of his plugins (Isol8) and it works fine.

On first look, it might be perfect. Thanks, MikeBeck!

I'll be watching. So far—on DP11 and Big Sur—so good.

The only other one I've found that works (and works very well) is this one, but it's $149 at the Boutique.

Agree. Not resizable but takes up very little screen space.

I need to check that out. I've been using one by BlueCat Audio that works well, but haven't had time to check if the GUI scales down.

MVmeter2 (link above) is working for me now, but what I could really use is a small/resizable meter with a peak hold function.

I'm using it to monitor the input to my mix buss (before signal hits my mix buss compressors), so after working away for awhile (and not really watching the meter) I glance at it and notice a high peak has passed by, I can go find the offending track.

The search continues.

Mike, I've been thinking about that for awhile. It'll be time to upgrade from my old Cinema Display sometime soon. Unfortunately, I won't have room for anything much bigger on my current desk, which I like. My best option for a second monitor would be to stack two monitors (vertically). It would work great, but with two screens there, I would have missed seeing the wolf pups snooping around just outside my window last week, so right now, I'm sticking with one.

I just upgraded my graphics card, so I could use Metal in Mojave and I'm running older 30" and 23" Cinema Displays. Just ask an experiment I took an old bedroom HDMI TV I had laying about and set up one behind my main monitor on an (audio) monitor stand, and then got myself an active mDP to HDMI adapter and voila. Works pretty well for a movie window, but I don't do any music for picture... but I got some extra desk space. See pic below.

However, as an experiment I took a 45 ft. HDMI cable and managed to reach my Samsung 65" 4K TV in the living room and was blow away... the graphics card (you'd have to look in my sig for the type) handled it no problem... at 60Hz. But the main thing is that the resolution was so good it was much more useable and more screen real estate than my 30" Cinema Display. Which started me thinking that I may just sell my 30" Cinema Display and find a decent 4k TV that will fit in the gap between the two built in racks that my nearfields sit on. I probably even afford to push it further away and still see it well enough. Can't imagine a new 4k TV that size is very expensive. Oh... forgive the messy studio. After being somewhat absorbed with a live music project for a while, I'm easing back into getting my studio somewhat back up to snuff.

Bottom line, is maybe there's a 4k TV type solution that would work for you and replace your main monitor? You might be able to position it in such a way it won't block much of your view. For me it was easy to add the other monitor... no view to speak of. I'm even thinking really of screwing in some thick plywood to the window frame and adding a VESA mount and a nice big 4k TV on the wall... but I need to see if my graphics card could handle TWO 4k TV monitors! Maybe if I sacrifice my 23" Cinema to the side?

Very strange. Maybe it's permissions on the directory the photos are in. I'll try something...
