DP 4 Kicks Me Out In New Imac G5 With Intel Processors

Post by Buddhaboy »

Has anyone had a problem with using Digital Performer version 4 on the new Imac G5s with the new Intel Processors?..every time i open DP 4 in OSX 10.4 I can get all of my projects set up, but when I click on play the Mac kicks me out with an error display...I'm able to audition soundbytes and even bounce the tracks to disk, however I cannot play them in DP4...The error code that pops up is:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0X0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0X0002) AT 0X00000014

I have the original program on an older Mac G5 tower running OSX 10.3 and it works fine...is there a problem initiated by the new processor? I have to wait until Jan. 31st just to get my firwire driver for the new Intel chip for my old 828....
Any help would kick ass! Thanks!

DP4, prior to 4.52, will not run on OSX 10.4.x. You need to upgrade DP.

EDIT: Opps, didn't see you were running an Intel mac. I'd guess this isn't going to work at all, even with Rosetta.

Ummm... correct me if I'm wrong here, but DP4 has to be recompiled as a Universal Binary in order to run on a Macintel. There's no way DP will run on that machine till 2nd Qtr 2006 which is when MOTU reps said they'd have DP5 in Universal Binary. I doubt it will run on Rosetta.

this is even if i revert my mac to osx 10.3?...i'm assuming from what you posted that because of the intel chip i will have to wait...which would really suck...though thanks for the response...i really appreciate it

There is no 10.3 Intel, AFAIK (unless it's in the bowels of a lab in Cupertino).

Nothing to correct here. This is indeed the case.

Demanding realtime apps (such as DP, Kontakt etc.) won't run until they are re-coded for Intel. Rosetta won't run if an application requires Altivec engine to be present (most well-optimized PPC music apps use Altivec) or if an application turns directly to hardware (this includes Audio/MIDI drivers).
Installing os 10.3 wouldn't help even if it would be possible to install to your new Intel iMac. You can't run any system below 10.4.4, which is the firsr Universal Binary version of OS 10.

I will receive my MacBook Pro in March and I probably still have to wait until the apps I need (Kontakt2 and MSI) will be UB. Notation applications, such as Finale 2006d, will run with Rosetta quite ok.

If they want to continue selling plugs, they'll port it over.

I can't believe that someone would buy the next generation machine, knowing it was a completely new architecture and that companies have stated that UBs need to be made to run programs, especially time/processor intensive, and expect they're old PPC programs to run with any degree of performance.

so hypothetically, if i had purchased an older imac g5 prior to the intel chip version, i may have had a chance of running my imac g5 in OS 10.3 and had the ability to run DP 4...if so i may just exchange my new desktop for an older model that CompUSA has in stock...sucks to lose the speed, but i need to get things rolling soon...thanks all for the info, you've all been very helpful

Thanks, James. This is what I was thinking.

MOTU also said that the drivers for the Intel Macs wouldn't be released before January 31st-- still a couple of days from now.

This is from MacNN.com:

"...said Jim Cooper, Director of Marketing for MOTU. Digital Performer 5 will ship in the first quarter of 2006 for a list price of $800. The company said it would offer existing registered DP users an upgrade path, but provided no details...."

First quarter, second quarter-- the point is that it's going to take time for DP to get caught up to the new hardware-- but perhaps 4.61 will work on the new Intels when the drivers are released next week?

Sidenote: While there may be lots of problems, this shouldn't be one of them. Altivec emulation is already in Rosetta; it was a late addition, and wasn't in some of the early developer versions provided, but it's there now in the release.

OP should post his full stack trace in the hopes we can see whether or not it's in driver space or not; it's possible that it's just CoreAudio dying, and not actually DP.

That's interesting. Did MOTU just increase the list price of DP? Might as well considering Logic is $999.

Not hypothetically, definitely. Any mac prior to the IntelMacs will run DP regardless of OS. There's lots of happy DP w Tiger users.

...and don't listen to buddahbelly buddahboy. I don't think it's that unreasonable to assume your new computer would work with the most current version of your apps.
