Clockworks click-to-midi and synch

Post by Robotron2084 »

Wondering if anyone has any insight – I have a recently bought an old but excellent MTP AV USB – works fine in OSX Big Sur and Clockworks works. I use it for simple routing of my simple DAWless set up. I have a Nintendo DS running Korg DS-10 cartridge and I can pan a 16-step click out hard left and use this to synch to my Korg Monologue sequencer synch in. Great! My question is can I send the audio click into the MTP AV Pedal A jack and use it as a master clock for the MTP AV? I can see in Clockworks I can use click-to-MIDI to convert the audio to MIDI and send notes and controllers and even sysex but not time-specific output. I was hoping to have it behave like the Monologue synch in. Does anyone know if this is possible? If not I suppose I could use the DS into the Monologue as the master clock for the whole set up using a custom routing setup in Clockworks and saving as a preset (MTP is excellent!). But if possible would be tidier the MTP AV route. Any insight appreciated

Maybe this:

Hi!

Thanks for the response. I am aware of this page in the manual – issue is it doesn't elaborate on how to turn a MIDI note trigger/CC message into a MIDI clock – it just states it can be done! How can I take a regular note trigger and turn it into tempo and MIDI clock? My Monologue can synch to 16th note audio clicks – I think my Beatstep Pro can do it if I change the device setup details (but can't do this ATM as USB connector only powering so no data connection). Can the MTP AV?

It also says to look at the manual for Performer so maybe you need that along with the MTP. The manual for DP11 has a section "Receive sync", the Tap Tempo subsections might be the info you want.

Ok – I don't run Digital Performer but sounds like it has the means to convert notes to tempo built-in. I do run Cubase and I see Cubase Pro can do a similar thing: https://steinberg.help/cubase_pro_artis ... ing_t.html
This is non-realtime – a tempo track is calculated from selected events. I was looking for similar simple functionality in a DAW-free setup – realtime. I think the short answer for what I'm looking for is no – the MTP AV can't internally convert audio clicks to tempo. I have non-MTP workarounds I will use instead. Thanks for your thoughts on this

What's a specific scenario that you want to accomplish? For example 4 bars of 120bpm and 4 bars of 150bpm, set in real time with no preset MIDI info?

> click out hard left and use this to synch to my Korg Monologue

Does this mean you have the DS set to say 120 bpm and the Monologue syncs to 120 bpm immediately on starting the DS? (I'm not familiar with the Monologue.)

Thanks for your interest. I am looking to use the DS-10 to be master MIDI clock – click out every step on 16 steps out of left stereo channel and sending this into the Korg Monologue 'synch in' works fine. So if the DS-10 is set to 130bpm then the Monologue is also 130bpm and they don't drift – all good. Korg gear does this easily (Volca range etc.). I was hoping that the MTP could do the same thing and be the master clock for my existing setup with minimal fuss – send the same 16 clicks into the Pedal A port and convert to MIDI clock. But seems not without Digital Performer or some other software recording the MIDI notes and deriving tempo from it. I like to work without a DAW and do live mixes so non-realtime is not good for me. I can make this work by hopefully using Clockworks to set up a MIDI routing to send the (converted from synch) MIDI clock out from the Monologue into my Beatstep Pro and other gear so it all magically synchs to the DS-10. I will try this when I get an opportunity – in the midst of a project right now. Thanks again

With an effects pedal for example, you have to tap (click) at least 2 times in order the pedal to know the tempo, it's comparing the time between the 2 clicks. You're saying that the Korg line magically knows what tempo you want with only one audio click and no MIDI info? If you have the DS set to 130bpm, the Monologue knows on beat 1 click 1 that the tempo is 130?

No – it’s just a click so of course takes a few beats to synch so I have an empty bar at the beginning to allow it time to resolve. Thereafter it stays in synch

Oh I see, so you just want the MTP to detect the initial tempo from the DS's click, not change the tempo in real time during the course of a song. Well I guess I'm stumped then, sorry for the unhelpful replies.
