DP 10.11 adjusting audio tempo on import

Post by sigmon »

Hey folks-

Strange thing has suddenly come up.. As I'm dragging audio files into the sequence window. DP is adjusting the tempo, though, not in a completely consistent way. I had a couple VO clips I pulled in, and most of the time, they're playing back slow. No change in pitch, just tempo. Dropped in a file from another source, same thing. I can drop the clips into a different DAW, no problem.

I've been using DP since it first came out, and Performer before that since '87 and I've never run into this before. So like most users, I don't use every option, but this is a new thing and I can't find the issue.

What in the world am I missing?
Thanks!

Try locking the tracks?

Have done a little more troubleshooting, but still no solution. My usual interface is UA Apollo Firewire (has worked flawlessly). Took it out of the loop and switched back to a MOTU 828.. same issue.

If I try to import audio through the "Import audio" menu, I can preview the clip, and if it's a 44.1 clip, the preview plays fast and at a higher pitch. If I preview a 48 clip, (same as the project) the preview sounds fine. But when I import that clip, the tempo is being adjusted down, but the pitch is being maintained correctly.

I trashed the DP prefs, but no dice. I've never had any problem dragging a file into DP before, but now this.

In 20 years, I've never had to lock tracks in any DP project I've ever recorded or edited, so I don't think that can be the issue, but thanks!

I can't recall DP ever auto-adjusting tempo on anything I ever imported.

May have something to do with the new ZTX pitch and stretch options for the tracks. Haven't explored that yet, though something to look at. Can be enabled/disabled in the individual track drop down menu in the SE.

Whatever this is, it's affecting how DP handles audio even before it gets imported- i.e., during the import process. Sent tech support request to MOTU. Will report back if I get any answers.

This was happening to me when I first installed DP 10.0, but it cleared itself up mysteriously after a few days and I haven't thought about it since....sorry, I know that's not too helpful apart from confirming your sanity.

I assume you've restarted and relaunched DP since this first occurred. Does it happen on newly created projects as well as projects started in earlier versions of DP?

Isn't there a preference for something like "Adjust Soundbites to Sequence Tempo on Import"? Not in front of studio Mac at present...

I'd take a look in the manual under "Automatic Conversions." Sorry I'm not able to look it up in more detail right now.

I think the Preference you mention would be Play and Record>Pitch and Stretch>Pitch and Time Stretch Options.

Yes! There's a Stretch-Enable On New Projects pref on the Pitch and Time Stretch Options Preferences page. You can also enable and disable Stretch from individual track's Settings menu. I believe Locking a track also overrides Stretch-enable.

Thanks guys - I wound up talking to MOTU tech support, and indeed, there are new default preferences that enable stretch for new tracks. It was a little confusing determining that because of the native tempos of the audio I was importing vs. the default 120, so it really sounded like a sampling rate mismatch! Good times.

I think most of us will want those defaults UNchecked!

Thanks for chiming in folks!

Thanks for reporting back. And so the unchecking begins.
