Upgrade to DP 10.01 coming soon...
Just heard from Matt at MOTU:
"We will be coming out with an update very soon. I don't have a specific date for you, but if I can make a guess, it will be at the end of the month? Again, sometime very soon. From what I've heard, it will have a plethora of bug fixes, optimizations, and features that will be included. "

Re: Upgrade to DP 10.01 coming soon...
That would be great as long as it's ready for prime time. Sometimes updates can fix a lot of stuff and add a lot of stuff and break something on a wide range of machine configurations that had not been beta tested. Yeah, I'm talking to you, DP 6!
I'm ever hopeful the update will be PERFECTO, ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. THE PERFECT UPDATE! But such claims are always hyperbole (at least), but I'll give it a stab.

As for a release date, I'm betting on 12/13 @ 14:15 (2:15pm). What? Too soon?

Re: Upgrade to DP 10.01 coming soon...
This is the third anecdote I've seen where support confirms an update is looming. That's great, at this point seeing as how MOTU loves to tie things to NAMM I'm starting to suspect we won't see it until then.
I'll take it as a positive that DP10 is long overdue for an update, i.e. they're wanting to get it right. Looking at the changes to Performer Lite you can see the trajectory, and for me this is all gravy, pretty much every major feature I've wanted is implemented.
Looking at the newly introduced Lite version, this is sounding like a nice DP7 update level of improvements:
Clips in the Sequence and hopefully Track editors, Clips become useful, people can use this instead of recording MIDI directly to the timeline and get their region/object oriented MIDI editing.
Velocity Tool The thermometer style meters in MIDI notes when selected now will respond to this tool to change velocity. No more dealing with the little v's in the CC editor.
Hand Tool for moving various windows around slightly.
Tabs seem to be replaced by icons in the Transport, hopefully user assignable etc.
Time Ruler
there are now three distinct lanes:
1. Marker Strip
2. Auto-Record Bar (punch-in/out locators with red highlighted bar)
3. Memory Cycle Bar (locators with green highlighted bar)
Bouncing Stems There's a pretty vague but hopeful description of bouncing stems in the Lite manual on page 546. Still doesn't clear up a lot but there's a selection for Tracks and Outputs in Bounce options.
Anyway, these are all great changes, and I'm happy if half come to DP10. Waiting around for the drop though, bad idea. DAW software is notoriously random to bug fix. Being an Ableton Live user, the wait for bug fixes and improvements to version 8 was ridiculously long, roughly a year and a half, and I'm 100% certain Ableton wanted it to happen overnight, it just didn't go that way.

MOTU needs to keep a buzz going. They want users to be hungry for an update so when we get one we're "appreciative" and say how great it is.Michael Canavan wrote:This is the third anecdote I've seen where support confirms an update is looming.
It's marketing, IMO.

Sure, of course, it's a commercial product. I think it's safe to say we're both huge fans, and I'm excited because a lot of the improvements are sore spots for me when using DP compared to other DAWs. Bounce options is a big one, and Clips will actually become useful to me when we can use them in the Track and Sequence timelines.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:MOTU needs to keep a buzz going. I'm in that sweet spot between serious bands/projects where I'm OK with an initial release that needs a bugfix update, but it's been long enough I'm actually the opposite in mood about it, I'm doubtful that the initial update/upgrade release will be that buggy. (not that it won't need a second update to sort some bugs) I think the time taken shows concern, just a guess, but then again I did not upgrade to 6 because I heard the horror stories, and I hate light GUI's.

Basically for me this is a perfect update, I can drop for the most part using Live, especially live oddly enough? Chunks and next sequence is a much better system than the ones offered in Live for backing tracks and the like, couple that with Clips and it answers 90% of the uses I have for Live. Ableton though do have better relationships with controller manufacturers outside of HUI/Mackie though, and it would be fantastic to see MOTU reach out and integrate their DAW with Novation, Akai etc. control surfaces for Clips, transport, visual haptic feedback etc.

In defense of DP6, they came out with an update nearly as soon as they released DP7 that wasn't so bad. I don't recall the version number, but I have it on my old laptop.mikehalloran wrote:Ahhhh... DP 6. Such memories...

Re: Upgrade to DP 10.01 coming soon...
I hadn't really used DP since v 2.7 on OS 9, so I was still futzing around with it in 5 when I would read reports on the forums. I recall a guy on the Ableton forums that always stayed a version behind, it's a great plan if you value stability over the perceived benefit of new features. 99% of the time the last updated version of a DAW is the most solid, Cubase notwithstanding.cuttime wrote:In defense of DP6, they came out with an update nearly as soon as they released DP7 that wasn't so bad. Since we'll be close to a solid year in to DP10 by the time the 2nd update drops, I'm willing to take the risk with it though. I admit I'm anxious as actual useable Clips, and new bounce options are huge deals to me.

Re: Upgrade to DP 10.01 coming soon...
I'm still amazed that MOTU continues to support and upgrade DP.
It is my favorite DAW for what I do.
I give a big tip of my hat to MOTU for keeping the flame burning.
Looking forward to the new versions. Yay!

Seems to me that a bug like the missing after touch would have been fixed sooner in earlier versions. It bothers me it’s taken this long as recording after touch is basic MIDI sequencer functionality.

Too late for a wish list?
• When naming a marker in the track view, tab to name next marker
• Adjust the grid from the track view
• Ability to increase font sizes (everywhere but certainly in markers, event list, etc.) without having to magnify whole interface
• Pro Tools/Reaper feature where you can make a time selection then drag volume automation, or any parameter in top layer up and down, Reaper, can even use a knob to scale it, so cool
• Lasso tool button on tool palette and ability to make lasso a non-temporarily selected tool
• Pro Tools style “Render” button to render in situ (non-destructively)
• Ability to resize “Take” column width
• Option to show volume, pan, sends and inserts in sequence edit like Pro Tools Edit window
• Set scale of sequencer track or automation data lane, i.e. not have to make minor adjustments in big wasted space. So set the volume range for example not +6 to -96, where I’m making fine adjustments around say -15, so the top value is -9 and the bottom value is -21
• More buttons (zoom, track layouts, mixing board layouts)
• User definable, renamable buttons
• More customization options in control panel (a la Microsoft Office)
• Mixing board layouts assignable to keystrokes (a la Tracks Layouts)
• Display name of track layout in tracks window (ideal) and/or control panel
• Display name of mixer layout in mixer window (ideal) and/or control panel
• Double click negative space on channel in mixing to launch editor (definable by data type, i.e. sequence editor, MIDI editor, Drum editor…) and/or context menu on mixer to go to see track in track view and/or sequence editor
• Record lock a track so it can’t be accidentally recorded over, should have clear column in tracks window
• Edit lock a track so it can’t be edited without holding an override key, toggle state should be clearly visible in tracks and sequence editor windows
• Auto trim silence
• Normalize plug-in to normalize all tracks without waveform editor.
• Drums to MIDI – Trigger improvements – set gain, less tracks and routing
• Fast way to set bite volume
• The ability to set an insert as parallel w/ gain control for each path
• Ability to set eq on a send
• Separate fader or knob for contouring volume audition leaving main fader free to adjust oveall volume w/o having to launch separate Trim plugin a la Reaper which shows contour volume in swim lane separate from fader volume
• Right click automation point to rapid input data w/o having to go up to bar and type in there
• Why does double click work to rename in bundles, but not track list?
• Two mutes, one automation enabled (marked when used) and one override
• From mixer view indication there is automation on the fader & pan (minimum) and sends and plugins like a little light to show there is automation data on that control
• Double click sound bite gain number in lower left of soundbite to input value
• Override snap to pitch
• Change track color from mixing board
• Recognize the F16 button
• Horizontal grid line in sequence editor
• Option to collapse Sends in mixing board view so they have the same height as the inserts a la Reaper
• Add horizontal fader to tracks view (and sequence editor?)
• Add tiny pan view/control to tracks view
• Multiple tool bars and huge customization options a la Reaper
• Quick select and cut with auto fades a la Reaper
• Mix knob on each plugin
• Volume in and out on each plugin
• Select data only in the automation lane and not all layers
• Select all in lane
• Copy different types of date, say a volume curve into a trim plugin trim pot parameter
• Just click and drag in sequence editor, like not in lane but click and drag box around lane data, and multiple tracks and lanes, lasso doesn’t always work
• When naming a marker in the track view, tab to name next marker
