I've seen documentation of issues with the t2 chip but i have a 2017 macbook pro which has the t1 chip. So puzzling...

Yeah, I'm not sure about the T2 chip stuff. I had the exact same issues with the 2016 model.

I use 896mk3 in studio en 4pre live. I need a new Mac and want to buy Mac mini 2020 i7.
contacted Apple and they say: "There are NO known issues with T2 and audio interfaces".
contacted Motu and they say:"It's system-specific". whatever that means.
