High Sierra and MOTU 828Mk3 FW

Post by Chrits »

Help guys,

Made the big mistake of updating Mac and cannot get Motu 828Mk3 FW interface to be seen.

I know the cables and unit are okay as Ive checked them on my other macs and everything work perfect.

Know that the firewire connection on mac is fine as it reads other hard drives.

Must be a software issue, really scratching my head here. Thought I was Tech Savvy but can't think of any solutions. Any suggestions ?

I've been trying to hook up my old original firewire 828 to my MacBook air using the TB port with FW>TB adapters using the MOTU Audio Installer 1.6 (73220).pkg. I just upgraded to High Sierra OS 10.13.5 but the mac doesn't seem to see the 828. I didn't try this before upgrading the OS. I wonder if I'm having the same issue?

Is that a MOTU support process? I'm not sure how it's done if so... I'm having a look at Jame's new post with links to MOTU support.

I googled "MOTU tech link" and found the page, but after filling the form and submitting the issue, I got this. I'm not sure if the support request got through:

Hopefully MOTU will get back to us on this. Seems we may need a driver update. The outmoded firewire interfaces may not be their first priority.

I am having the same problem with a MicroBook II on a new 2018 MacBook Pro. The USB cable is going into the USB-C adapter- and the machine does not recognize it.

Strangely enough, I have the same Motu drivers and Mac OS (10.13.6) on a 6 year old machine with a standard USB port. And it works.

My 828mkII is not having these issues — but did in Sierra. By deleting the grayed out old profile in Audio Setup, a new one appeared that works.

Same issue here. Old MBP went up on lease, new one has 10.13.4

Tested with two different 828mk3 FW, the computer won't see either of them.

Disappointing that MOTU doesn't seem to be supporting legacy MOTU hardware users.

I've attempted to, using the "tech link" you suggested Mike (see my third post above). My inquiry apparently got through in spite of the "site error" alert. There was a preliminary email response from MOTU which I suspect was automated—no followup, no solutions or guidance offered. Yet.

They will respond rest assured. My experience with MOTU’s tech support team has been consistently excellent over the years.

Over the last 3 years, MOTU has replaced 828 mk3 twice, once for $99 (failed display) and once for free (failed FW ports). (This last case was just a few weeks ago.) They don’t support the mk2s anymore unfortunately.

You can still purchase the 828 hybrid at Sweetwater and as long as that is the case, support should continue.
