Clippings : Copying grouped audio tracks between projects?
Can Clippings be used to copy a collection of grouped audio tracks (in a folder) from one DP project to another Dp project ?
EG: I created 10 audio tracks (for live drums) in a Dp project and want to use the identical tracks minus the actual audio soundbites and paste / apply to other DP sessions.
Can anybody confirm if Clippings can be used hold actual tracks ?
I'm away from my Daw until recording session this Sunday so need to confirm this before I get there.
Thanks
Max

Re: Clippings : Copying grouped audio tracks between project
Yes.
Clippings can hold empty tracks, any kind of tracks, including aux and VI tracks, with or without plugins. They can also contain MIDI notes or audio, and any kind of CCs and audio automation. You can even use them for Conductor Track stuff such as markers, tempo maps, etc.
You can basically use them to hold and combine anything you get by a Time-range selection.
And yes, they can be used to copy a collection of tracks from project A to project B. I do this all the time. Just mind that the grouping itself might not be carried over with the clippings, just the ungrouped tracks.
Also, you have to be VERY careful with your bundles, especially if you use audio or aux tracks that depend on preset busing schemes. Bundles don't get carried over either, so you must import the bundles before-hand.
What I always do to avoid this is that all my projects always use the same bundle set, so they always match and I can import/export clippings freely and accurately between projects. It's awesome not having to worry about this and enjoy big-time flexibility.
Another DP feature you may wish to explore, akin to clippings but better, is using sequence chunks instead of clippings. These DO carry groupings, track takes and bundles. Same workflow, but more complete. So you could, for instance, devote a "Template for grabbing stuff", which is itself based on your main template. Then, you get to your saved sequence chunks via DP's Load command. You can choose one or many of these chunks, and you can specify which additional items to import (audio, bundles, etc). This workflow is really awesome.

Re: Clippings : Copying grouped audio tracks between project
Thanks FMiguelez .. This is very helpful and I will keep bundles consistent between projects when using clippings to copy tracks. Good reminder!
Regarding Chunks: From what I remember: Do I select tracks I want to include in the chunk, create and name the chunk and then load chunk within another Dp project ?
Thanks again

Re: Clippings : Copying grouped audio tracks between project
You could populate your special "chunk-importing" project many ways. You could import (load) other sequences, or you can duplicate existing ones, including your active chunk in your current project. You can then edit these duplicates for whatever purpose you need.
So if you already have a good drums template you want to keep using, duplicate that chunk in the chunks window, and that's where you'd point the Load command to when you want to call it from another project. Afterwards, you could gather all your chunk sequences in a dedicated project for this purpose, as if it were a Clipping container. It would be easy to manage these special chunks if you keep them in one place. And they can be as "atomic" as needed. The more the better for maximum flexibility.

This is one of those features from Pro Tools (session data import) that I would like to see in DP. Nothing beats it for speed.

Re: Clippings : Copying grouped audio tracks between project
For some reason, I couldn't copy / paste faders / tracks in clippings window or could I get chunks to save and load presets as you prescribed.
I was able to copy insert settings / plug ins to the clippings window but not the actual tracks
(Kick, Snare, Tom 1 Tom 2 etc)
Perhaps It's how i'm selecting the tracks.
I wil check the manual and see the exact method for how this is done.

Thanks Phil. There's nothing like seeing this in action. A picture is worth 1000 words.
A video is worth a million.
