1ghz 17" Powerbook (currently), 1gig ram, Tiger 10.4.8, DP 4.6.1, Motu 828, Edirol FA-101, Bidule, Reason, SuperCollider, synths, hardware FX, cables, plugs, plug adaptors, extension leads, dust, vacuum cleaner
now what?
This is all exciting news - I'm particularly pleased to see them release a dual-core iMac, which I may choose for myself. I've been using a G4 733 and it's been understandably frustrating and slow, especially with MachFive and even a couple of reverb plug-ins going. None of my projects are complex enough to justify the expense of a quad desktop, so the new iMac may be just the ticket.
But. . .
What's the story with DP4.6? Is MOTU planning to release a native version shortly? I see that Apple has this "Rosetta" software that interfaces with the OS to provide smooth running of older Mac software on the new Intel machines, but I can't believe this doesn't result in a noticeable performance hit, especially with something as processer intensive as DP. I guess it still makes sense to upgrade sooner rather than later, but I'm curious how MOTU will address this transition. Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere - I've been off the list for a while.

I have to wonder what this means, though, for our plugins and soft synths/samplers. I get the feeling it's going to be at least a year before anyone is going to be doing mission critical professional music production on a Macintel. The new MacBooks look amazing, the sooner DP comes out the better, I would love having more speed on my mobile rig, even if there aren't many universal binary compatible plugins. Or is the AU plugin specification something that sits apart from processor specific binary code??

Rosetta is built into OS X, so you will theoretically be able to run existing apps on Intel Macs right from the start until the developers put out universal versions - no need to wait. Of course, there have always some glitches even just bumping from one OS rev to the next - like from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2, so....Kazrog wrote:I have to wonder what this means, though, for our plugins and soft synths/samplers. The rumor is that "old" apps running on a MacIntel under Rosetta will run slower than the Universal Intel-native version of the same apps, BUT apps under Rosetta on a MacIntel will still run faster than the same apps on a PowerPC G5.I see that Apple has this "Rosetta" software that interfaces with the OS to provide smooth running of older Mac software on the new Intel machines, but I can't believe this doesn't result in a noticeable performance hit, especially with something as processer intensive as DP
All this is moot for me though - I have two UAD PCI cards, and UA has not made a peep about PCI Express support, so there will be no shiny new MacIntel in my future until this little fiasco is resolved!

Last week my music store guy told me not to worry, and that the UAD thing is covered.Resonant Alien wrote: All this is moot for me though - I have two UAD PCI cards, and UA has not made a peep about PCI Express support, so there will be no shiny new MacIntel in my future until this little fiasco is resolved!
I'm hoping I can get some news of this at the NAMM show.....from MOTU too.

MOTU.COM says drivers will be ready by Jan 31st 2006!
Apple has been aggressive and MOTU and other progressive
firms following Apple's salvo.
Those that think we may "have to wait for a year" to go to the
other side may be in for a pleasant surprise.
I wonder when G5 price hacks will start on Ebay....
