This takes WAY too long
Is it just me or have we been moving toward a mindset where fast is never fast enough? I guess I’m just old school. I’m always amazed at how fast we can do things now. I was reminded of that this morning when I was cleaning out an area of my basement and came across a tape splicing block. I actually used to do things that way, and I sure many of those here know what I’m talking about. Yet no matter how much we’ve progressed, things just still take way too long.
Is there a faster way to do this operation? I takes me 3 key strokes and there must be a way to get it down to 1. I can’t possibly do a real time bounce. That takes forever. The client is looking over my shoulder and I’ll lose them forever if I can’t work faster. This took me 30 seconds in DP and it only takes 28 seconds in PT. Oh no! DP is doomed. Is there any way to speed up sound? It’s taking way too long to get from my instrument to the microphone?
I really think it’s getting out of hand. I love it when an innovation makes my workflow faster/easier, but I feel like I hear way too many complaints that it just ain’t fast enough. I miss the old days when waiting for the tape to rewind gave you a moment to reflect on what was just recorded. Ahh - thup, thup, thup. I miss that sound. Every tape recorder had it’s own distinctive rewind sound. When you got to know your rig you could stop it at 0000 just by the sound.
So…my advice for the holidays.
Relax... Focus on the art... Take the time to enjoy it... And, don’t dwell on how slow your DAW is.
Hmm. Should I keep this splicing block or throw it out?

And just remember me looking in the bin, for some piece of over-sliced tape.
Guess what, I made a living in those days too.
And clients were happy they hired me...

Re: This takes WAY too long
As we keep hearing contrary statements such as "cold as hell" and "hot as hell", I came to the realization recently that this is yet another example of people not specifying units!
You see, Hell by definition is 66.6 degrees. But if you use Kelvin, that's pretty cold. Contrarily, in Celsius, it's awfully hot!
I guess this is where we Americans still have an advantage, as 66.6 degrees in Fahrenheit is pretty much the perfect temperature!

I agree totally with the OP. I see dozens of threads on this forum carping about speed, specifically the speed of performing a given action.
I begin to wonder if anyone but me takes any time to think, to make creative decisions, to try a couple of options... a lot of users seem to be pushing themselves toward some kind of TV Series Hacker mode, where you sit and wildly tap computer keys while something miraculous happens.

Thinking is great, but you still need to do something with those thoughts and then suddenly you're back to the issue of having to execute.Gravity Jim wrote:I agree totally with the OP. I see dozens of threads on this forum carping about speed, specifically the speed of performing a given action.

No matter how you break it down, things still have to get done and some folks don't enjoy unnecessarily spending extra time on things that need to be done anyway.

I mourn all that lost magnetic tape on the floor -- piles of it. Just think what might have been, but in one impulsive moment with a slice of the blade ...
The music comes out of me and into you and becomes all of us. Together we take that out into the world. ~adapt. fr B. McFerrin
