is Panther 10.3.9 best for DP?

Post by boonier »

Theres been more talk of late about Panther being the most stable OS to run DP, as it doesnt tax the cpu as much as Tiger.

I personally dont use the fancy features of Tiger like dashboard although Spotlight can be handy, but is it enough to warrant running DP on it when I could be getting more out of my Powerbook? I dont have the multi processor punch of the g5s so I could do without the extra overhead of 10.4

So, the prospect of erasing, partitioning and then re-installing everything seems a right pain in the arse, but I will do it for proper real performance gains

1) Basically I'd like to hear the recommendations on whether its worth me doing or not and 2) Is there a painless method to doing things like this?

thanks

Given that you stated you don't much care for Tiger's other capabilities (I too am underwhelmed) I would also recommend sticking with Panther for reasons of stability and cpu usage.

I did things a##backwards and upgraded to Tiger, only to discover I have "volunteered" for a $100+ upgrade for Performer.

As for painless and OS upgrades - I did not have any substantial problems and this upgrade - it was one of the easiest I can remember (and that's talking since Mac Plus era).

Tiger 10.4.3 runs relatively smooth for me. I think 10.3.9 was more stable. (I have had a few kernal panics since the upgrade, but I am not going backwards)

Otherwise things are ok.

thanks folks

my main reason for asking was the cpu overhead. Is there some kind of article regarding stripping Tiger down to its bare-bones? I did follow the 'Tracking the big cats' article a while back when optimizing Tiger, but I wonder if there are extra things that can be done. I've disabled Dashboard but I dont know if theres anything else

If the cpu difference is 2/3% then its pretty negligible and I may as well not bother really. If its more like 10-15% then thats another thing....

Tiger seems marginally better for me. I had some display bugs with DP on my pb G4. They're gone now. But if 10.3.9 works for you, don't bother if all you want to do is optimize DP.

He's already on tiger and is asking whether he should try to roll back, not whether he should upgrade. Though in either case I'd say it's not worth the effort if your system is working for you now.

Is 10.3.9 the best of the 10.3's, for DP?

I've a friend who's still at 10.3.5.
I've asked him why not update, but I don't have a reason for him as to why he should.
Because it's there!

SYstem 10.4.3
Slightly better then 10.3.9
I installed just necessary fonts, avoided a ton of printer drivers,
kept languages to a minimum, and turned off dashboard.
No problems.

My understanding is that system-wise 10.3.9 is more problematic (overall) than 10.3.8, which is why I haven't applied my update...at least that's what I remember from when the update happened.

Hey guys... I have two hard drives. One is 10.3.9 and the other 10.4.3 and I gotta tell ya, if i didn't have 10.3.9 last week I would have been up s__t creek. Tiger freaked and left me in limbo. Had to buy Diskwarrior to recover drive. Also had Kernel Panic on late night auto sleep.

I notice immediate speed increases in 10.3.9 opening files and general snappiness.

I have done what SD did and removed all the fonts and turned everything I could off in tiger but 10.3.9 is still faster.

I just bought a laptop. A 1.67 15" for my trip to Vienna in April and it has the latest OS. I agree to change it would be a pain in the ass so it stays the way it is but if you have the luxury of two drives i highly recommend having both OS's online just for comparison.

Even more-so as Mactel is being synchronized and i think 10.4.2 might be best of the PPC versions to date.

doubt if I will update further considering where they are headed with intel. All that sucks unless your buying new. I'm not.

Be happy now, :D

I have, yes.

It works fine agreed but I keep 10.3.9 to compare.
It's bailed me out a few times too.

Nuendo doesn't seem to change much either.
