This is the most important thing for me (all these VI's!), and I'll just stick with 9.02 if they have not fixed this.

Thanks!
As far as I can tell this hasn't been changed back. Was there any indication that it would be? I was under the impression that this was the new norm.

Phil
There are two modes. The default is pre-gen. It's best to run it there. The individual plugs you can set to real time but real time now is just for graphics. That is different from 9.02 where the run in real time was an advantage. That is what the MOTU tech explained to me because BFD3 was choking. Soon as I took it out of run in real time it has been perfect. So if you are opening old project turn off run in real time unless you need it for some graphic use.

Pre-gen operation with 3rd-party plug-ins
MOTU works hard to ensure a high level of
compatibility with 3rd-party virtual instruments
and effects. There may be cases where pregeneration
may not work as expected with a given
3rd-party plug-in. These cases should be reported
to MOTU and the plug-in vendor so that
compatibility can be fully established. In the
meantime, you can run the plug-in or instrument
in real time. To force a virtual instrument track into
real-time operation, record-enable any MIDI track
that targets the instrument. To force an audio
track’s effects into real time, the track can either be
record-enabled or monitor-enabled. Alternately,
the effect can be placed on an aux track, either in a
chunk or a V-rack, with bussing used to access the
effect. Aux track effects are always rendered in realtime.
You know that all sounds great in theory, but after a disastrous two days with 9.1, I went back to 9.02.

Do you mean the approach described in the manual did not work? Or were there other reasons?

Really both.

The manual does say that, but in practice everything was going haywire.

Crashes, CPU spikes, and mainly instruments behaving like they were in pre-gen when they were not supposed to be, etc.

I always upgrade without thinking about it and ignore all of the internet "gloom and doom" and "upgrading will kill your system!!!" B.S. postings.

I can't think of the last time I had a problem with a MOTU upgrade.

Usually it just makes stuff better and less buggy.

I was unable to get on the board last night after an hour of trying, and am too busy at work to read what has been posted since then, but just want to mention that Ivory no longer crashes on my system after this update.

Yes, that is usually my experience also. So, 9.1.2 did not fix the problems that plagued your system, I take it. I hope you get to the bottom of what is causing these issues!

I'm sorry...I have not yet tried 9.12.

I was asking about the upgrade and kind of got off on a tangent.

I'll definitely try 9.12 sometime next month when I get a few days!

And hopefully all of the problems will go away!

The hosting company was definitely having some issues last night. I was on the phone with tech support trying to find out what was going on and couldn't get a straight answer. I think they were doing some server maintenance. Seems to be okay now.

Could you please list what plugs you are having a problem and were going haywire. That would be very helpful. Thanks

The tech let me know last week 9.1.2 it would be out quick... I thought it might be last Friday. But they put it out Wednesday and everyone at MOTU got out of Dodge. They are doing a 5 day labor day weekend. Some companies are great. MOTU is one of the best...

So finally with 9.12 Amplidood's Themes are no longer available. They worked in 9.1 for me. Anybody else? That in itself is almost enough to downgrade!

The method of record-enabling MIDI tracks does not work, since an actual recording pass will erase all the MIDI in the tracks. I guess you could set up a dummy MIDI track for the purpose of keeping the VI in realtime, then switch to the track you want to record... no... that doesn't work. You'd have to enable Multi-Record to make that work if you were recording MIDI into another instrument.

Anyway, you can just open the GUI interface for each VI and change the options to realtime if window is open. For a lot of instruments that would become very tedious and time consuming. The windows add CPU overhead, so it may be impractical after a point.

My advice? Join-in and figure out what works and what doesn't, and write tech-links about those things that do not work. They'll eventually get this figured out.

Remember my suggestion? They make a “real time” button? Right next to the MIDI learn button. It would make things much easier.
