DP 4.6 and Logic? What are the differences?

Post by jeffreyscott451 »

I am going to be buying a new DAW. I am an EX cubase user and I am switching to Mac. I will be using a G4 powerbook and I want to start collecting some hardware and software synths and effects. My studio will defintely be a combo of both. If you can give me some insight as to the differences between. I used DP 3 a while ago and I have tinkered with Logic Pro 7.

I have them both and if I must say, I love logics way of handling Virtual Instruments and the customization of the mixer. For editing audio in the arrange window, i think DP4 had the edge. Bouncing multiple tracks of MIDI data to audio files in logic is a dream for sharing with other studios. I'm sure there're things about DP that I dont know so hopefully someone else will chime in..

I prefer DP to Logic, but from everything I've heard, DP will not run especially well on a laptop (it's great on a G5!)

Also, if you are in the process of building a collection of synths from scratch, then Logic is again a clear winner. It comes with a lot of good-to- great synths and effects.

Too bad, really, because I think DP smokes logic in most other regards.

But remember you pay A LOT more for Logic. I really prefer the way DP does it. Buy the program, and with the money you save then you can buy the VI's YOU want.

Let's actually try "facts" and not what people have heard from other people.
Properly setup, with work priority set to medium, Dp gets a fairly high
track count on laptops.
I still have that link to another forum asking about DP,
as this has been beaten to death a number of times already.

Hi Sdfalk,

if possible, could you enlighten us a bit about *the dark side of the...* Work Priority thing ?

is it something to care about mainly with laptops ?

I own a dual G4 1.42 GHz with a Motu 896 HD and have left the default "high" work priority : what kind of improvements (if any) could I have if I change work priority on a desktop to medium or even lower ? something like a higher plug-in count would be really appreciated !!! ;)

thanks in advance

Ok, let's try civility instead of snarkiness. I didn't profess to know this first hand, as I wouldn't dream of running a sequencer on a laptop (not the current crop of laptops, anyway). I wrote clearly that I had heard this from other users --a lot of other users, actually -- and I never approached it as fact. Just as I wouldn't approach what you just wrote as fact.

If you disagree, please just disagree.

I agree. For my own purposes, I would rather pay less for a sequencer and have more left over for dedicated synths. But, if you're just starting out with a new platform and you're looking at bang-for-buck factor, there's no way you can get Logic's range of plugs and DP for $1k. You're certainly not going to get much (quantity-wise) for the extra $500 you saved on not buying Logic.

If you had more to spend, I would suggest getting Komplete and DP. Or a collection of other plugs and DP. But, for most of us, building a collection takes a lot of time.
