DP Beginner - Is there a tutorial on how to use QuickScribe?

Post by twistiejoe »

Hi Everyone,

New to DP here (still on the trial), switching from Logic because I'm looking for something that has a far superior SCORE VIEW note input function.

Can anyone tell me where I can learn how to use QuickScribe?

I'm originally a Sibelius user, and although I'm used to a sequencer as well, sometimes the way I write just needs to be worked out by HAND (or notation program) first because I think very harmonically/lyrically/motivically/voicings/jazz harmony etc.

So I'm looking for something that can make this much easier, mainly so that I can see the MIDI data in SCORE view (just the notes really), across ALL tracks at the same time, AND can edit them easily too!

I had a go at using QuickScribe the other day using the demo but I can't work it out. If it doesn't do what I want I won't buy DP and I'll consider Cubase instead.

Does anyone else work this way? Anyone know of a tutorial for QuickScribe?

Hope you can help, thanks!

PS I've actually made a similar post asking Sibelius users.

Welcome to the forum!

I know there are a few DP video tutorials out there, but I doubt they have a dedicated chapter for QuickScribe. Why? It's not necessary. It's one of DP's easiest to understand and least complex parts of the app.

Your best bet? THE MANUAL.

Yes. :rtfm:

QuickScribe doesn't have as many features as Sibelius or Finale, so I really think you can learn how to use it only one evening. It's pretty basic.

Get a coffee and read and follow the manual along with a test DP project.

These are VERY GOOD tutorials for getting deep into DP.
I don't see QuickScribe covered, but everything else is in there. Quite good, really:

and an advanced one:

Thanks!
Okay so, this might be silly but ... where do I find the manual???
Do I have to buy DP to be able to see it?

Thanks!

Ok thanks after googling for quite a while I finally found a copy of the manual -
I don't think it's going to take just an evening - this will take at least a month to get my head around! One day I'll be good at this I hope!

The PDF manual is included with DP and should be in the demo AFAIK. Look under the main HELP menu in DP.

Funny, a few years ago this would have created quite a stir.... hee hee

I know!

What's going on with us?!?!?!?

A few years ago we would be on the 4th page, and machetes would've been out by now... Hell, look at what you did to my iguana's eye...

I guess the PDF manual spoiled all our fun :(

Oh, there's plenty of room for "fun" if you head over to the Finale site. OMG!

I didn't know it was so bad over there...

The "sad" thing is that, of course, that still happens here, most likely even more than before, right under our noses, but since we don't have a tell tale parameter anymore, courtesy of the PDF manual, then we just have to let it go.

So in a sense, the manual has been a red herring

The bright part is that MOTU's legit user base and buzz should be growing.

A couple quick points.

You can select the MIDI tracks you want to see, then press SHIFT-Q to open quickscribe.

From there, you will see the page and can select notes and drag them.

In the very top right corner of the window is the tiniest little circle/triangle. This is a mini-menu that most windows have the open a list of things related to that window. Click that and you'll see a set of palettes which will be immediately useful. You will also see options...

One really important thing is to look at all those options windows. Especially Track Options. One thing that is a little confusing is that on the Track Options you can set the current track to the default settings, or you can make settings specific to that track. This is a pretty important thing for making sure things are in the octave you want.

I'm pretty sure if you noodle around in all those settings windows you'll learn much of what you need (that and in the F'ing manual).

You can't do slurs, staccato, accent or other articulations. If you run into a specific question that is not clear in the manual, let us know.

Thank guys - thank Stubsonic!

Actually I do have a question. I see in the manual that there is a keypad input function - is it possible to change the layout of the keypad, as in, change keyboard functions/shortcuts like that, so that I could make make it relate to the same keypad function in Sibelius? That would make things great for me seeing as I also write a lot of acoustic music and using the keypad in Sibelius is like walking to me.

Any tips generally on using the keyboard in score view to quickly and manually inuput notes step by step?

Also - is it possible to simply click on a note, then press a chord on your MIDI keyboard and BAM the chord is there? THAT is the most frustrating thing I can't work out how to do in any other sequencer, and it's one of the main ways that I compose - I want THIS chord, THIS voicing, THERE - now.
lol.

Anyway I'll keep working on it but any tips much appreciated.

Cheers.

In the SetUp menu is the COMMANDS item, which brings up all the keyboard shortcuts. I'm not sure if you can set up the keypad to do what you want.

I don't ever use step entry and don't work in DP that way. But you might find something useful there.

Okay thanks I'll give that a go.

I'll never understand how people manage to write counterpoint and harmony without being able to see a score! :S

Some people can see the score even when it's not in print format. I also prefer printed scores to "virtual" ones.
