Feature request—Naming custom controllers in graphic editor

Post by plurye »

Here's another of my abstruse-yet-I-believe-useful feature requests:

When you open a graphic MIDI editor window, the lower half of the window allows you to draw in or reshape cc data. In the pencil tool cc assignment drop-down menu at the bottom of the window, there are 8 choices: 1-modulation, 7-volume, 2-breath, 5-porta time, 6-data, 10-pan, 11-expression, and... "others." It's a great system—if you want to quickly assign the pencil tool to one of the "named" cc's. But I frequently use one or more of the "others," and each time I do so, I have to enter the cc number as if I had never used that assignment before. It would be a real timesaver for me to be able to build up a custom list of "named" cc's that would be available in that drop-down list. So, e.g., after "11-expression," I might be able to store "56-attack time" as an immediately available preset option. This would save both time and brainpower. (More cc icons would be great, too, but there's always the quick filter for that.)

Make sense? Helpful to anyone else?

I see what you mean.

FWIW, you can change the name and controller in that list in the Preferences, so you can put in that list the 7 controllers that you use the most, no matter what they are.

I've asked for this feature in the past as well. It would be quite useful.

IN THE MEAN TIME, my solution has been simple and very effective: Say hello to QuicKeys! (THANK YOU TRIPI 8) )

With my QK macro, I just press a shortcut and DP will automatically change the pencil tool to edit the corresponding controller, even if it's in the "Other..." subcategory.

This saves LOTS of clicks, and in the long run, lots and lots of time. More importantly, I have a TextEdit doc where I list my custom QK shortcuts and the corresponding MIDI controller. So I just type F1-ks, and DP automatically changes lane in the GE with the pencil ready to enter Keyswitch velocities for VSL, for instance.

With this, I actually don't need this feature in DP anymore :)
Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

Thanks for this—I was a user of Quickeys in the... let's just say there were no smartphones at that time. :=) Guess it's time to start up again. I hadn't realized you could actually change the cc number and names in that preference pane; I thought that pane was just for reassigning cc icons to one of the seven named cc's. Good tip (E.g., I never use breath, porta time, or ... "data"??). Vel xfade for VSL is one of my biggies as well.

Would still prefer this be implemented as requested, but that sounds like a good workaround—thanks.
