Wiebetech points out serious limitations using FW400 devices on a FW800 bus. Specifically, they mention "no more than 2 devices".
The symptoms Wiebetech mentions with their hard disks mirror reports on some audio forums, that after several hours of use, devices suddenly lose connection. Wiebetech suggests that this is a problem with FW800 bus controllers or Mac hardware, and not peripherals.
Personal bias: I trust information coming from reputable HD vendors over audio companies, as I'm sure the former caters to a much larger customer base.
In light of all this, I would suggest a $30 FW card for your PCMCIA slot -- keep the busses separate, any everything/everyone should be happy.
