Orange Tree Samples Group Buy

Post by rnappi »

I'm not sure how many people know about these guys, but their sample sets are really great. They're having a group buy sale with up to 50% off everything if they get 250 participants. They're also offering other incentives to join in, but I leave it up to you to check out their web site or facebook page for details.

How does a "50% off everything" work in a group buy?

But OTS does really great work, and Greg is one of the nicest and most helpful guys you'll find doing this sorta thing. If I were looking for samples right now, I'd jump.

Their entire catalog is available for discount. You sign up for the sale making a pledge to buy something. As more people join in, the greater the discount, which caps at 50% with 250 participants. You can also change your selection at any time before the end of the sale. This way if they don't hit their target, you can reduce your order to something that doesn't bust your wallet.

They just announced this and they're already at 20% off with 50 buyers. With 21 days remaining, I don't think their going to have any problems getting to 50%.

Yeah, I got the email earlier today and it was a bit of a surprise. I've used group buys for IK Multimedia and maybe a couple of other vendors and it pays off. I'm about to take a look now to see which OTS products I am missing.

this looks like a great group buy & it already has 61 participants on the 1st day, the 50% off tier should be reached quite easily.Greg is a 1st class developer and a really nice guy.
The new Rick Bass library will be my next OTS acquisition, it sounds awesome! :headbang:

Turns out the only one I don't have is the Rickenbacher Bass library, and the demos sound bloody awful to my ears, like discrete notes in a ROMpler. I didn't have a chance to find demos of the Scarbee Rickenbacher to compare.

I'm quite happy with most of the OST libraries that I own, and generally get better results out of their basses and guitars than other vendors, when doing quick mock-ups that emphasize rhythmic playing.

But I don't often use MIDI for bass and guitar (vs. the real thing); the gem in the collection to me is the Passion Flute, which fully captures what I hear in my head when doing Latin Jazz or even Straight-Ahead or Modern Jazz.

There's a new unspecified instrument that they're releasing. I read earlier that they made a new upright bass, so... maybe?

I hate to sound like a sales rep, but thought you'd might like to know.

Oops, I also didn't buy the Rosewood lib, which is a Yamaha piano. Got enough of those already; rarely use them except for rock/pop.

The new lib is unidentified but will be given away in a lottery (1 copy).

Oh wow, I just took a listen to three separate and very long (10 minutes) Scarbee demos, and at best they sound like a DX7 Fretless Bass patch (or -- depending on the demo -- a typical MOTIF fretted bass patch) and nothing like a Rickenbacker!

Very machine-gunny, which isn't a problem with Orange Tree. Also, way more discontinuity between notes with the Scarbee, and it sits very poorly in the mix if one can trust any of the numerous demos as accurate indicators of real world usage.

Looks like Orange Tree Samples is the best game in town for Rocks at the moment... and given the 50% off price in the group buy and the extras, as well as Greg's loyalty to his customers, I may just go for it after all.

Oh, just to clarify, the Scarbee product is plectrum-based whereas Greg's is finger-style.

Here are two of Greg's own demos, which are FAR better than anything on the website:

http://www.gregjazz.com/upload/Rickenjam.mp3

http://www.orangetreesamples.gregjazz.c ... ionaut.mp3

I'm going ahead and joining the Group Buy. I don't own a Rick, so I don't mind spending a small amount of dough to see how that sound works during the mock-up stage, before picking which of my actual basses comes closest to that sound in context.

How does the Yamaha Rosewood C7 sound in a jazz context, as compared to Ivory, that I already own ? Does it bring something different ?
