Sample Rate Hell
So, my default recording set up is 48/24, using my nice Apogee Symphony I/O.
But sometimes I like to listen to my work through the laptop's internal speakers. When I open the projects without the Apogee connected, the projects default to 44.1/24. Then, they cannot play the audio files within. I go to the Audio/MIDI Setup Menu, change it from 44.1 to 48, and within a second or two, it reverts back to 44.1. I change the sample rate on the main bar and it doesn't accept the change, but no error message.
How do I change the sample rate? and not just for a half second, but for the duration of the edit session?
Thanks

Don't change the sample rate in AMS, change it in the DP Audio Hardware Driver window.

And that holds true even if I'm going from external interface to internal MacBook Pro sound?

Re: Sample Rate Hell
When I go to Setup->Hardware Audio System->Configure Hardware Driver, it lets me select 48KHz for the sampling rate, but it won't "stick." I pull down that option from the pull-down menu, but it just shows 44.1KHz.
And here's the error message I get when opening the project:
"The hardware sample rate of 44100 Hz appears to be incorrect for this project; most of the Soundbites were recorded at 48000 Hz. Change the hardware sample rate, convert the files with Automatic Conversions or use the Convert Audio File command in the Soundbites window mini-menu."
Of course, I don't want to convert soundbites, as I just want to do some listening directly from the MBP and want to preserve the original sample rate.
What I really don't understand about this is that it didn't used to happen, until recently, and then only on certain projects.

Any thoughts?
MagicDave's suggestion doesn't work when I'm just trying to use my MBP in standalone mode, with ear buds.

If I understand correctly, if DP is running on the MacBook with no external audio hardware connected, you can not select 48kHz in the DP hardware driver window without it reverting to 44.1. Is that correct?
If so, something is happening in the OS to set the Mac built-in to 44.1. This shouldn't be happening unless there is some other software running simultaneously that is trying to reset the system to 44.1. Are you running any other audio software when DP won't stick to 48 kHz?
If not, definitely something is going wrong in the OS. What I would try next is to create a new user account, log in to that and run DP again. If DP sticks at 48kHz in the new account, that indicates a stuck preference in the original user account. It could be a DP preference but my instinct tells me it's probably something else.
What happens when you test in a new user account?

Re: Sample Rate Hell
FWIW, whenever I run Finale, it reverts the system to 44.1 and I have to "revert it back" to 48k. As mentioned above, if something else is running and grabbing the system, it can take over.
One innocent question here: Do you have Garageband on your system? That was changing my MIDI buffer size (there's a MIDI buffer size preference in that app) and it was causing problems for me a few years ago. Same kind of thing and tracking it down was a beast!

Nope. Occasionally iTunes, but usually just DP 8.04magicd wrote: If so, something is happening in the OS to set the Mac built-in to 44.1. Re: Sample Rate Hell
I do have Garageband, although I literally have never used it. I do have all the Native Instruments Komplete instruments, which can run as standalone and I have Mainstage. However, when this problem manifests itself, DP is usually the only app running.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:FWIW, whenever I run Finale, it reverts the system to 44.1 and I have to "revert it back" to 48k. The weird thing is that this problem only affects some projects and not even consistently. It appears to be increasing in frequency, never having occurred the first 8 months I had this MBP. Two things I can think of have changed since just before this first started happening.
1) I upgraded to DP 8.03 (and subsequently, 8.04)
2) I bought an Apogee Symphony I/O and loaded software to run it. Used a MOTU 896HD for years w no problem (but I wanted some boutique conversion).
Somehow I suspect #2 as being complicit.

Re: Sample Rate Hell
FWIW since DELETING GB and associated plist my *MIDI bursts and dropped notes have disappeared.
* Bursts of MIDI notes and other data being sent when I hot play. This is also a symptom when some plugs don't run in real time.

Re: Sample Rate Hell
Before I deleted it I set the MIDI buffer in GB to max. It's the only app I know of that sets a MIDI buffer size. From Apple. Duh!

Re: Sample Rate Hell
I've had problems like those described, but I assumed cause was settings left over from Logic rather than GB. I get songs from people in GB. I seldom open them in GB, but I do open them in Logic, and export the MIDI and audio for import to DP. I notice that DP will not run properly after this unless I restart the Mac. So I can't confirm the problem with GB, but whatever it is, Logic does it too.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Before I deleted it I set the MIDI buffer in GB to max. Re: Sample Rate Hell
Does Logic have a MIDI buffer setting as well? I was surprised to see one in GB and there is no other app or setting on the Mac for it AFAIK. Did it fix all the bursts and hung notes? Maybe, maybe not, but I haven't had any since.

I haven't come across a MIDI buffer setting. There are hints of such a thing in the environment but there be dragons there. When I've had Logic running, nothing fixes problems with DP (MIDI and Audio) except restarting the Mac.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Does Logic have a MIDI buffer setting as well?
