Constant Crashes

Post by scooter »

No I don't mean the song "Constant Cravings."http://www.motunation.com/forum/posting ... e=post&f=1#

I've been getting a lot of really annoying crashing lately. I guess any crashing is annoying but this one comes with a jackhammer sound (not as loud as a real one) that lasts about 10 seconds and always comes with it. The crash report says that thread 58 crashed. Here's what that thread says:

It looks like it has to do with my Waves plug ins. I don't know what more I can decipher from it. Any ideas??

thanks,

2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac. Snow Leopard 10.6.6.16 gig memory. 2408 MK3 & MOTU 24 I/O. & 828mk3 D.P. 7.22 Lots of plug ins. Reading glasses
OK, so looking at your specs (no, not the reading glasses!) it would appear right from the outset there are two things to change IMMEDIATELY!

UPDATE Mac OS to 10.6.8 - there's no reason to be in a lower level SL version.

UPDATE DP to 7.24 - there's no reason to be in a lower level DP version.

And I suspect, UPDATE all your drivers (audio, MIDI, etc) and all the programs you use and their component parts (drivers, helpers, etc) as well as all Mac updates (with the possible exception of iTunes). That includes any mice, trackballs, scanners, printers, yadda yadda yaddas...

THEN REPAIR PERMISSIONS and check your drives - all your drives - with disk utility (repair drive). For you startup disk, VERIFY and if it needs repair (and I bet it does) then startup from the SL disc and repair THAT drive from the disk utility on the SL install disc.

THEN... come back and tell us about your constant crashes - if they are still present.

Well, I am at OS 10.6.8 ands I am at D.P. 7.24. I was at 8.02 but decided I liked 7.24 better.
But I was have the same crash issues with 8.02 also.

Repaired permissions. Like you said maybe update drivers and such might help.

I based my comments on your sig so maybe that's all you need to update. :)

Seems there was an issue with Waves V9 and DP on Snow Leopard that was reported a while back, can't remember the details. Whatever it was it kept me from updating to V9 because I was on SL and DP7.24.

I have crashing issues with Alloy 2 for some reason, although Nektar and Ozone work fine.

the fact that DP/motu is not mentioned once in the crash thread, but Waves is mentioned a ton of times suggests it's probably a Waves problem.

I have to admit Waves is expensive but their tech support is second to none. So I'll give them a call and see what they say.

I know that buzzing crash sound all too well. It always stems from a Waves plug-in crashing in DP. It is incredibly jarring. I get it with Waves 8 and DP 7.24 on Snow Leopard. I believe it would happen in Waves 7 too. Usually it happens when I am getting near the RAM limit (around 2.5GB DP7 will almost always crash.) Judging from your crash reports and mine it may be GUI related. I believe my Waves plug-in window/s is/are usually open when this happens. Would be curious what you find out from Waves.

Yes. I thought it might be GUI related also. I will be in touch with Waves and report back what I find out.

First of all Waves doesn't guarantee that Waves 9 will work with DP 7.24.
But it is supposed to be fine with DP8.
Here's what the tech suggested I do for the problem:

1. Create an empty text file named "no_context_sharing.txt" and place it in: System HD /Library/Application Support /Waves.
2. Delete the Waves Preferences the folder: System HD/Users/Current User/Library/Preferences/ Waves Preferences/ and check if the problem persists.
3. Move the "Digital Performer.Audio Unit.Cache" file to your desktop: System HD/Users/Current User/Library/Preferences/Digital performer/audio unit info cache and check if the problem persists.
4. If the problem persists un-install the Waves plug-ins using the Waves un-installer application, located in System HD/Applications/Waves/Utilities
After running the un-installer, please repeat steps 2, and re-install your Waves plug-ins using the latest V9 installer.
