6 crashes in 2 days

Post by jmatos »

Hi,

I've been working on a film cue that's about 7 minutes long, and DP has crashed on me 6 times already in 2 days. All the crashes have been doing different things, and one of them while I was away from the computer. I know I have to update to 8.04, but .03 had been good to me until yesterday.

For the project I was using an instance of Ivory Piano, some VSL strings, and 3 synths for pads. Nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas if I have to reinstall DP from scratch?

Thanks

I'd start by trashing all DP plists and repairing permissions.

Where can I do that? Couldn't see it under the Library or System folder.

User> Library> Preferences> com.motu.DigitalPerformer.plist

Also:

User> Library> Preferences> DigitalPerformer> Preferences

These files will automatically regenerate the next time you boot DP.

***

Should a full uninstall/reinstall be necessary, there are two ways:

1. From the DP install disk, choose "uninstall".

Or--- (and?):

2. Control-Click on the DP app icon. Choose "Show Package Contents" from the window that appears. Delete the package contents-- empty Trash. Search for anything that says "Digital Performer" (one word or two), and delete that as well. Double check for aliases.

Take care not to delete your MOTU files unless you want to. These would include (but not necessarily limited to) MIDI and Audio Drivers. If those should accidentally be deleted, just download fresh drivers and reinstall them (if you are using MOTU's MIDI and/or Audio drivers).

The DP authorization appears (?) to be an invisible file, in which case it wouldn't "appear" at all. The chances of deleting it are therefore slim, but reauthorizing DP is easy and quick if needed.

Thanks, Frodo. All I'll add is make sure DP is not running when you trash the plists of it may save the errant preferences, assuming that is the problem.

If MOTU Audio Setup is running, quit the application. Once you have set up your hardware for the session, it is not necessary for it to run anyway.

There is a firmware bug in certain monitor cards including some versions of the ATI Radeon card found in many Pros (incl the 5750 my iMac) that can cause those Macs to crash if certain software is running. It's an Apple problem and no one knows if it will ever be fixed.

DP will not cause this conflict.

Although I learned of the Apple bug from TechTool, it was MOTU Support who told me that Audio Setup could trigger the conflict. It fires up when I start my 828mkII and, as long as I quit the app when I have checked my settings, there is no problem.

Here is the list of affected cards per MicroMat (TechTool)

ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5670
ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5750M
ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5770
ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5870
