Toolbar in 8.04
Greetings, All,
Just downloaded 8.04 and started using it. Soon discovered that the floating toolbar won't come up using the "shift O" command. "Tools" is also grayed out in the Studio menu. Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes?
Thanks. - Max

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
You are correct. If you close the consolidated window and have floating windows only, it appears. But if you use the CW, then the option is greyed out. Presumably because the tool bar appears at the top of the CW so why would you want it to float as well?
But... if the tool bar is showing and you hit control-1 to force it into the consolidated window, it crashes DP. That need to be addressed in a future update. Whether or not there is any value to having the tool bar open along with the CW is somewhat questionable, at least for me since, again, the tools are available and configurable in the CW.

If you deselect Editor Tools in the Control Panel Preferences it will open with shift-O and you can still use the consolidated window.

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
Indeed it does! And then selecting ctl-1 with the Tools active still crashes DP!
Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks guys, what you said makes perfect sense. Haven't crashed the program, though....

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
Are you all talking about the Toolbar or Shortcuts window? And are you all using full-screen DP?
I don't use the fullscreen DP, as it totally hoses the ability to use non-CW windows, not to mention it doesn't allow the control panel to float to other spaces. So, Spaces and full-screen DP are totally incompatible, since we're not really talking about "spaces" since Lion OS, but Desktops, and a Desktop is what you get when you go full-screen. The whole app is dedicated to one desktop. (or vice-versa) So, to Apple it makes no sense to dedicate one desktop to an app, but still have floaters out there in other desktops.
Anyway, that is immaterial to this thread. I tried the things you all were talking about, but could not get any crash or failure of the Toolbar. BTW, I think the default key for toolbar is the tilde (~) key. It is on mine, anyway. Pressing the Tilde key still toggles the toolbar on and off.

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
I can't get the tool bar with the CW at all and the tools are in the Transport Control section. Whenever I have the toolbar floating (non-CW) and hit control-1 to park it in the CW I crash. Period. Every time. Maybe it's my system or some conflict? Doesn't matter as I never call up the tool bar.
I do, however, use the CW and full-screen and can still float windows in the second monitor as well as the main screen. Unless I am misunderstanding you, Shoosh, is that something you cannot do?

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
I've had problems with the Toolbar disappearing or showing in a different place or different orientation since forever with DP, but no crashes and never thought of using ctrl-1. FWIW, I learned the single key default shortcuts and stopped playing Find the Toolbar. Much better and faster than mousing and clicking.

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
Michael, try making the Control Panel NOT part of the CW. When the Control Panel is floating, along with the Shortcuts Window, the Toolbar never fails me. I always use the one-key command (Tilde), and I just don't have a problem with the toolbar. Never have. Still don't.
I'll have to test the full-screen CW stuff later. Haven't had time to mess around as I usually do.

Re: Toolbar in 8.04
MIDI Life Crisis prompted me to try CW again - and I am very thankful he did. However I use the CW spread across 2 displays and therefore as a Control Panel preference I have the Toolbar shortcuts sitting alongside the other controls on the embedded control panel - see below.

Of course this does not work on one display as there is no room for all the preferences on the embedded control panel - however you can get rid of a few things - sometimes I don't even bother with the transport controls as I never use them as I use keyboard shortcuts. So this is one way to do it using the control panel preferences.
