Ok well it looks like I actually purchased a bad batch of cables... Incredibly noisy when you'd touch them and wouldn't consistently transfer the clock data. I stole a whole other bunch of cables from another system I've got and now everything is fine.

I knew MOTU would never let me down...

Thanks anyway!

So did you get your Octopre's to sync to the 828? I just added an 8pre to my Traveler setup. I would like to have the Traveler be the master and the 8pre in converter mode (no Firewire) as slave, so it would be light-piped in to the Traveler. I am hoping the 8pre can be set to ADAT optical sync (Traveler ADAT optical out -> 8pre optical in). Traveler would be on internal sync to prevent a sync loop. This setup would allow both interfaces to switch sync if I change sample rates in software.

Guess I'll hook it up and see if it works. I have another system that has a Digimax LT 8 channel preamp, but it has word clock input, so it syncs automatically to that from an 828mkII. Digimax goes ADAT optical into the 828.

MOTU 8pre sync to MOTU Traveler, 828, 896, etc.

Might as well answer my own question for future reference...

I got it to work! Here's the setup:

Traveler is master, connected to computer via FW400. Traveler is set to internal sync. 8pre (no FW connection) is light-piped into Traveler Optical in. 8pre operates in Converter mode. Traveler light-pipe out to 8pre in (upper row!) 8pre is sync'd to Optical in, manually set from front panel. Now, when I change sample rate in MOTU audio setup or in DP, the 8pre changes to match. No clicks, no glitches. 8pre shows up in same Cue Mix as Traveler as ADAT inputs.

This is just what I was hoping to do. It all operates as one system now. :woohoo:
