DP White Paper?

Digidesign released a white paper entitled the 'ProTools 48 Bit Mixer'. Basically, it details what is going on with the bits during mixing ITB and to illuminate how summing is occurring in their DAW.

I would LOVE if MOTU would do the same thing for DP, if not just to shed light on exactly how ADC is working as well as other areas of functionality (for instance: how does the summing function during the BTD function - and how can it occur more quickly than real time?)

All in all, more info is always appreciated and it would be great to know why&how DP works the way it does! If for no other reason than to help me troubleshoot more quickly...

This will never happen. MOTU is a very closed corporate culture. It's owned by a reclusive private owner (Avid is publicly traded) whose influence seems to trickle down to all aspects of the company. It can be frustrating at times (now specifically as I wait to hear when a PCIe 424 card will become available), but as long as they keep delivering the goods their dungeons- and-dragons approach to PR is ok with me.

I highly doubt that publishing a white paper was done by Digidesign because Avid is a publicly traded company! The major incentive was to explore the rumors about mixing ITB and the issues of doing so... I also think because of the high price of entry into the world of PTHD, it behooves them to show that they are thinking about the architecture of their product.

I don't think MOTU is a 'secretive' company by any means - I just think they lack the funding, headcount, and an R&D dept that a larger company like Digi has. This is not saying that one product is 'better' than the other, but is a factor in having the resources to explain the architecture of the software as well as quick updates/ compatibility/etc.

MOTU has a great product, but I would think that a white paper on the architeture may not be the best allocation of resources for them at this point. I would venture to think their software is most widely used by a consumer (and not professional) market.

However, it would be nice to know how DP is actually taking advantage of the 64 bit architecture in my G5...

Any other thoughts on my generalizations about MOTU's core user base?

Yes I would say the opposite

that DP has a higher percentage of pro/aspiring pro users, especially in film scoring circles, live use, instalations, as well as more traditional music recording/production.

Something like logic would have a higher consumer to pro ratio. (and higher overall usage, of course)

And here's my proof.... oh hang on .... um.... OK, so it's just a feeling, no proof whatsoever.

Most of the Guys I know who use DP are "known names" (You've seen them perform and you've seen their names scrolling by in the credits)

So for their base being mainly consumer I'd Disagree, my entire network of guys (locally) who are sold out to DP are professional FULL time Engineers and Musicians. You can run to the local store and read their names in the CD booklets of these major label releases.

Just depends upon what you like. Oddly enuff quite a few of these chaps also use Reason in conjunction with DP to sequence their tracks. Citing ease of use on a laptop when on the road gigging.

And I am a Full time Engineer (Studio and Live)
