Audio Inputs grayed out

Post by heyitsjimi »

Hi Guys,

Somehow, from out of nowhere, I can no longer record audio, neither mono or stereo tracks. The Built-in input is grayed out. The only thing available is bus tracks. I haven't changed any settings in "Configure Audio System" or in "Audio MIDI Setup". I tried uninstalling DP (and wonder if it got rid of everything) and reinstalling to no avail. I'm using 7.24. I was going to record a piano track directly from my board to the input of my MacBook Pro. This is the way I've always recorded audio tracks and have never had a problem before.

I hope somebody smart can help me with this. Feeling stupid would surely beat being dead in the water like this !!!!

Thanks,
Jimi

WEll while we're waiting for someone smart, I'll chime in. Have you check your settings in the OS Sound (System) Preferences?

That was a smart question, and yes I did. I should have mentioned it in my post.
Thanks for the reply

Are the tracks assigned to a functioning output?

Are you using the built-in output?

Something may have changed in the hardware setup - in DP go to Configure Hardware Driver - see what is selected - something may have changed. If only built-in output is selected, you have to shift click on built-in input to select it as well.

Cheers

What about the sample rate? Does that still have to be set properly in order to have working inputs? It seems like they changed that so it recognizes whatever sample rates you have at the moment, but maybe I'm thinking of the bit resolution.

Thanks for the replies guys.

. As far as I can tell, everything is the way I had it set originally, including Sample Rate. Interestingly if I hit "OK" with "Built-in input highlighted in the upper box of the "Configure Hardware Driver" window, I get the following message : "Digital Performer cannot use this CoreAudio driver as it is currently configured because no outputs are available. You must configure the driver so that the MOTU Audio System can use at least one output pair." If I highlight both, I get the following error message : "Mac OS Error (MotuAudioSystem Mas CoreAudio error epon, DevSet:SetOListener 647 (1852797029:1).
I can't figure out how to deselect all, something always remains highlighted. If I leave it with "Built-in Output highlighted, I'm back at square one.

Also perplexing, after trying to do an uninstall/reinstall twice, using both my original disc and the updater I downloaded from MOTU, I was never asked for my password. I'd also looked for anything MOTU/ Digital Performer related on my drive & deleted everything I could find.
To top it off, the following (USB MIDI: MOTU MIDI Driver.kext FireWire/USB Audio: MOTUFireWireAudio.kext. PCI Audio: MOTUPCIAudio.kext) are supposed to be in the extensions folder of the Internal Drive, according to MOTU, and after doing the reinstall, they are not.
I downloaded another updater from MOTU (in case the one I had was possibly corrupt), and I'm going to try doing an uninstall/reinstall again. I sent a support message to MOTU & I'm waiting for a reply. I don't know what else to do.

Sorry this is so long. It's enough to put you to sleep. Thanks again for the replies !!

Hopefully MOTU can help you sort this out. It does sound like the greyed out record enable is due to lack of available active output for the audio track. I had this happen to me once, and it took me a while to figure out my track needed to have a valid OUTPUT assignment to accept an INPUT.

repair permissions?
in core audio see that the built in input and output are selected.
presuming audio is working in everything else on your computer
re: the kext files - are they perhaps in the system library for all users as opposed to the library just for you as a user, or vice versa?

can you try selecting built in audio with some other program, like a two track editor or the like. download twisted wave and see if the input/output selections work as expected.

trying to determine if the issue is in DP or in your os right now.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm back up & running. I ended up downloading 7.24 again & running the uninstall again. I also searched everywhere for MOTU & Digital Performer on my drive & trashed just about everything. I think MOTU should let us all know what else needs to be deleted after the uninstall to actually to an uninstall. I ran the 7.24 installer, thinking it wouldn't work. By rights, I should have had to run my original disk & entered my password, guess I missed some stuff on my search. The bright point being all my settings (key bindings, theme, etc.) were unchanged....but everything was back to working properly. Happy ending.
Thanks again everybody for your suggestions!!!
