Mac Mini and Ultralite Power

Post by pat17 »

Hi there 8)

I just received the new Mac Mini 2012 yesterday. All installation went fine, though I didn't have time to test the setup before I had to go to work. Let's see this point tonight...

The Motu UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid and Micro Lite were recognized and installed without any hassle.

The only point concerns the Ultralite power. With my previous Late 2009 Mini, I could power on and off the Ultralite although the Mini was off - connection through FireWire.

With the Mini 2012, it must be on so as to power up the Ultralite. Not a big deal as I need both working to use the Motu. Excepted that when I power off the Mini, the Ultralite is also powered off.

My only worry is how safe it is for the Ultralite to be shut down this way - power not coming from the FireWire any longer - and not by pressing the power button as I used to do before. Is it safe? Can it harm the device in the long run?

Thanks in advance for any advice / opinion. :D

Thanks Mike! Since the manual doesn't mention anything in that regard, I've sent an email to MOTU support.

For those interested by this issue, the answer from the technical support is it doesn't harm the UltraLite to have it powered off through the Mini.
