Processor clipping? Delete the plist?! [DP 8.01]

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

Sorry I could not find the post from today where someone was seeing a processor spike after updating to DP 8.01, but I remembered them saying they forgot to delete the DP plist (preference) and once they did, all was well.

So this evening I was seeing processor spikes (with audible clipping) in my project. I quit DP, deleted the plist, restarted DP and the spikes were gone.

Thanks, whoever you are!

Said folder being hidden by default in Lion and ML. You have to change something in the OS to do that but you have to google that as I don't have time to look for it right now.

There are actually two sets of Preferences you need to delete after installing DP 8.01 - (both found in User/Library/Preferences)
com.motu.DigitalPerformer.plist
and
Preferences (which is inside the com.motu.DigitalPerformer folder).

Yes, deleting these eliminates the "Digital Performer is running low on memory" warning on launch, and also keeps the Memory meter (in the Audio Performance window) from pegging red.

That said, I still don't get the Memory meter. In all of my track-heavy
projects, it shows 90-95%. Even in a new project with no audio recorded and no plug-ins, it shows 50%. I've posted a question to Magic Dave in the "Usage" section, asking for the lowdown on what the heck this meter really
shows.

Update - opened the same track/VI heavy projects that were originally
created in 7.24. Memory meter in DP8 pegging red on all of them, and I'm
getting the "Digital Performer is running low on memory" message. Even
after deleting DP's preferences. I'm in DP 8.01, 32-bit.

This was not happening in DP 8.0. Something isn't right. Sadly I'm really
gonna have to go back to 7.24.

That used to be true and I even saw that up to today when I deleted the plists. But then they came back like this:

One little preference file in the MOTU folder and a little further donw the window...

That's it!

Wonder which is for DP 8? I'd guess is the first one. Anyone know?

... and don't forget to repair permissions. Some of the files associated with plugin had errors in my setup after installing 8.01.

I don't need to repair no stinkin' permissions! Oh wait, what was that? I'm being told I DO need to.

The results from Disk Repair - very interesting...

Repairing permissions for “ML Boot Drive”
Group differs on “Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/MAS”; should be 0; group is 80.
Permissions differ on “Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/MAS”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxrwxr-x .
Repaired “Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/MAS”

MLC,
I see in the top picture the 2 obvious plist to trash,in the bottom picture I'm not sure which you mean,
could you actually list the names of the plist files that should be trashed?

A question for all plist trashing mavens.
I installed and just repaired permissions.
If trashing the plist is a basic procedure we should employ, why are we not instructed to do this with the upgrade procedure?
I've never done this with a DP upgrade from what I remember and I'm curious if this is a basic step we should do,why is this part of the upgrade procedure not mentioned by MOTU.
Curious......

Actually, no because I really don't know which should be trashed. But the file I am referencing is called simply "Preferences" and sits three files below the Document Templates folder in both images. Since the dates on the upper image is more recent, and since I have not used DP7 for two days, it would seem to me that the files in the bottom image (Digital Performer™ folder) are, in fact, the DP7 files.

In the images posted above, DP8 did not rebuild the "com.motu.DigitalPerformer.plist" but after repairing permissions the file is now back!

Image

So again - at this point I couldn't tell you what file to delete, but I delete them all (all preference related DP files, that is) and REPAIR PERMISSIONS. Did I mention that REPAIRING PERMISSIONS seems to make a BIG difference?

Any other information about how that works is below my pay grade.
