Word up: FM8 latest update, loses settings on each use

Post by mhschmieder »

The latest FM8 update seems to have broken Audio Units caching, as every time I reopen projects with FM8 now, it comes up in a fully initialized state.

It's a good thing I fully annotate my projects in terms of selected presets, offsets from those presets (when I edit them), volume and effect settings, etc. Still, it's a PITA to have to redo these settings each time.

I did see mention of this on another forum, and expect NI will fix it soon.

Poor NI - they have a history of breaking functionality with their
updates, despite their good intentions.

I just checked what's up with the updates for FM8, Massive, Absynth 5, Guitar Rig 5x, Reaktor 5x, etc. Seems they're all primarily updated to work as AAX
plug-ins now. Doesn't affect us DP users.

OTOH I did recently install all those updates. Possibly not wise given the focus of that posting. They may not have tested as thoroughly on other plug-in formats as a result.

The strange thing though is that I made heavy use of Absynth during the past couple of weeks and didn't have any problems with that update.

I just ran NI Service Center and there are no more recent updates. I hadn't used FM8 in about half a year so it's possible this problem came up in an earlier update and I just didn't have a chance to notice.

Hmmmm... just installed my update to FM8 recently too. :( I haven't tested to see if I'm having the problem, but that would kinda suck. :(

Just for kicks, I tried it again, and sure enough, all my settings were gone.

I was entertaining the possibility that the problem was a result of having been booted in 32-bit mode, which I have to do when I use Cisco and Remote Desktop Connection to log into my Windows box at work from my MacPro at home.

I'm booted in 64-bit mode now though. No difference in behaviour. I also did Repair Permissions. This problem seems quite specific to FM8, whether a new instance or old.

I spent most of the weekend reinstalling a number of things including Komplete. I installed AU and VST but not AAX.

I just now created a project with an FM8 patch, saved the project in DP8 and reopened the project to find the same patch in place.

I would relocate all formats but the AU component version(s) to a safe folder. Otherwise, I'm installing only AU versions and am staying away from installing the same plugin in different formats.

Took me a long time to get back on this, but I just did the same thing with the latest version of FM8. I works fine for me as well!

This may not be relevant to the mhschmieder's problem, but when I installed whatever the latest rev of FM8 is, none of my old patches would appear. It seemed as though FM8 had somehow blitzed them.

After freaking out for a bit, I finally read the "read me" and discovered the patch format change, and that I had to run the standalone version once and do the batch conversion in order to convert all my extant patches to the new format. Once having done that, everything went back to normal.

mhschmieder, have you done this? Might be that some or none of your old patches have been converted and moved to the right place. It's very confusing.

But here's another thing about FM8: I can't get it to "take" the master volume. I set it for a patch, save the patch, close the VI, and when I reopen it it's back to 100% volume. Also, FM8 doesn't seem to want to respond to CC#7. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I don't think so. I've had this VI for 6 years. :?
