Shoot out , DP 8 vrs VE Pro
I invite DP 8 users to test DP 8 against VE Pro for efficiency.
I have yet to receive my copy so I will have to chime in later.
But run a tough program like LA Scoring STrings or 6-7 instance of Omnisphere in DP 8 and the same identical set in VE Pro and let us know the results.
Max out your computer, be MEAN!!!
Run the buffers down to 128, 64 even. lol.
Which is more efficient on the cpu and ram?
Which has more drop outs when hitting tons of notes?
I am seriously curious about whether I will be using VE Pro once DP 8 arrives.
I’d like to NOT use VE as it is just extra baggage under the hood. But VE is a very bullet proof , efficient program.
SHould be interesting, let the games begin!!

Re: Shoot out , DP 8 vrs VE Pro
I don't have VE Pro but I do have Spectrasonics stuff and LA Scoring Strings and I can tell you things are running much smoother and faster in 64 bit, even with a 128 buffer (some spiking but no glitches at 64). I opened a heavily-produced pop tune with lots of LA Scoring Strings and Omnisphere, Trilian and Stylus RMX and Waves stuff (V9). No problems. And no problems opening plugs as the track was going. Scrolling and zooming smooth while track was playing. And I turned off Kontakt Memory Server (I still use it when I'm in 32 bit mode with DP). Very impressed, details to follow once I put it through its paces...

Re: Shoot out , DP 8 vrs VE Pro
Interesting.
I don't use VEP on my main machine, only on the auxiliary machines (trying to get away from saying "slave" machines). What I'm going to try in 64 bit is to turn off the aux machines entirely and have a go with everything on the main computer, the 12-core. I have never had any CPU related bogs or crashes on this machine with DP, not even close. The RAM limitation has been all that's been holding me back. We'll see..

Well in another thread I'm being told booting into 64 bit is overrated and not a big advantage worth worrying about. I'm skeptical of those claims.

Magic Dave should we boot our computers in 64 bit?MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Well in another thread I'm being told booting into 64 bit is overrated and not a big advantage worth worrying about. I'm skeptical of those claims.
Is there a special key command on start up?
Will certain apps like Pages, etc not work if we do boot up in 64 bit?

There's an app I can dig up for you that makes the Mac default to always boot in 64bit K.
There is a key command but I forgot it.
Maybe hold 64 or option 64 when you boot. Google it.
The Mac runs more efficiently in the 64bit Kernel and even gets higher scores on the site that rates the different models,if you can boot in 64,go for it!

Re: Shoot out , DP 8 vrs VE Pro
Booting the mac into 64 bit kernel and running an app in 64 bit are two separate things.
For the kernel it makes very little difference. For apps, besides access to more memory, it can give a performance boost as well since the 64 bit hardware has some advantages (things like bigger/more buffers running 64 bit code). But even with 64 bit apps, the performance difference often isn't huge - by far the big upside to 64 bit is the ability to use more memory.
On the kernel side, with 10.6.8 and up macs that are able to boot 64 bit kernel probably already default to that. And with older macs that have 64 bit cpu but can't run 64 bit kernel, it's not an option so no real reason to worry about it on those machines.

Yeah, you hold down the 6 and 4 buttons when you boot. But that's only until you reboot, where it reverts back.kgdrum wrote:toodamnhip wrote:Magic Dave should we boot our computers in 64 bit?MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Well in another thread I'm being told booting into 64 bit is overrated and not a big advantage worth worrying about. There is a way to make that permanent, but it involves using the (UNIX) Terminal. However, it seems pretty easy and straight forward..
let's see if I can find it..
Ah yes, here it is:

It's old, but should still work, at least in SL.. don't know about the various Lions.

On somewhat related news, Magic assured me that the timing issues and delay compensation stuff with VEPro have been fixed in DP8.
Good stuff.

That’s great man. Next, if you could be so kind, ask him if we should boot in 64 bit and if there is a difference I am hoping this is unnecessary as I think that if I boot in 64, 95% of my programs will disappear, word processor programs, browsers, etc.labman wrote:On somewhat related news, Magic assured me that the timing issues and delay compensation stuff with VEPro have been fixed in DP8.

Most if not all of the programs we use will work in the 64bit Kernel.
Try it,all my browsers work, every app etc.....
I've been in the 64bit Kernel since December or January,I don't think I've found anything that doesn't work in it.
I think you're confusing the 64bit Kernel with a 64bit app.

Re: Shoot out , DP 8 vrs VE Pro
SO if I read correctly, I can just switch my comp to 64 bit anytime without an issue and those programs that can benefit, WILL benefit, and those that are 32 bit, won;t be bothered?
Then WHY would anyone ever want to have the comp start up in 32 bit?
