Avid Artist series and DP

Post by edledbury »

I thought that anyone on the forum using these units might want to know that, according to Matt LaPoint at MOTU, Avid no longer actively support DP integration. I've been wanting to use these units for some time, but have always found that in sequences with a high track count ( my template has 200-300 MIDI tracks) eucon pretty much grinds DP into the dust. Ah well,......

So sad, but I'm not surprised.

Definetly V Control is the future. Hope they leave the old "Mackie Control" implementation and make their own protocol, so they can incluide "Auto-bank to selected track" like Euphonix systems.

I guess I should sell my Artist MC Control to someone using Protools.

Best.

Yes completely agree. The one feature that Eucon offered that I can't find anywhere else, is the ability to have one fader always follow the highlighted track in the sequencer's tracks window. Most of the time, while I'm writing, I only need to modify one track at a time. I'd love a control surface (either hardware or virtual) that displayed everything that the control strip in DP displays. And that always follows whichever track I have selected.

For that matter, I would love the option to have any window follow the selected track. I use the quickscribe window all the time, and wish it would update itself depending on which track I have selected in the tracks window.

My hope is that if DP becomes as popular with pc users as it is with Mac users, that MOTU will come out with a great hardware control surface. I think they would do a good job of it.

It's actually kind of surprising to me that MOTU hasn't already gotten into the controller market.
Considering their strong presence in both the hardware and software markets it seems to be a bit of an oversight IMO.

The Eucon implementation in DP is stellar. I went from that to MCU control, a huge step down, IMO. But I needed a real console more than I needed the extra control the Avids offer.

That, and as someone mentioned, the Artist controllers wipe out your CPU in DP. This was something that was a top priority for them to fix, back when they were Euphonix. Then they became Avid, and gave DP users the middle finger.

I've never understood why MOTU has not come up with their own controller yet..

Nothing has changed since times Euphonix, at DP there was the most bad support of all controllers and it is fault MOTU, though Artist Series this best that is for DP, IMHO.
If to use only faders and panorama the best controller to not find,
And if to use all possibilities with DP it will not turn out

might be true. but its working well for me now..

happy with my MC Mix.

I probably wont be trying to upgrade *anythins* any time soon :)

I might splash on the transport - i keep reaching for it - even tho its not there :)

I SOOO would have bought a MOTU fader surface should it have existed.. but I must say its reassuring that I can use the MC in many Apps.....

*EDIT*****

actually I'm not obsessed with MC series - is there any other jog wheel that people have had success with DP with..

the ability to jog is what I'm after - not convinced soft keys etc are worth while... ( would rather spend $100 than 400 if u knwo what I mean.. )

Yes, but the more units you have, the worse it gets for the CPU. I had 4 MC Mixes and an MC Control, which was constantly causing the CPU to spike, on my 12- core!

I don't see how you can beat the MC Transport, IF it plays well with DP. I played with one last year (granted, it was on Pro Tools) and I have to say it was nice.. very nice.

If somebody is interesting pattern MC Control for DP which I did for itself and it is not forbidden by rules, I can share with pleasure

thanks alfred - pretty sure that would be fine... I'm still on the fence about it.. actually I realise I may go on vacation soon.,,,, so worried about that rather than new gear,,

I thought I saw a kennsington thing onece..

and BTW HUI jog was worse than useless with DP until version 6... then it became usable.. I think it was an improvement made on the DP end...

Here a pattern for MC Control, hot keys by default as the are added a little

The user-set files are saved as .xml files on your computer running EuControl. These are the settings for your custom assignable soft keys.

The default user-sets are stored here:
Mac OS:
/Library/Application Support/Euphonix/SQRL/...

-The default user-sets are updated as part of our installers. This is also the user-set that you can "restore" from the EuControl SoftKey editor.

The Custom user-sets are stored here:
Mac OS:
/Library/Application Support/Euphonix/UserSets/MC2User/MC_User_Set_Root/...

These files are never overwritten by our installers. To move your custom user-set from one workstation to another simply copy the desired file from this location to the same directory on the other workstation. The new user-sets will load next time you launch EuControl.

Hey thanks for that. I'm new to DP8, and have an Artist Mix and MC Transport. I have not been able to figure out why I don't see the amount of menu commands available to assign to softkeys that I do in say, Pro Tools. I went to assign a "Click On/Off" command to a soft key on the MC Transport and I could not find it to add. Is that due to Avid not supporting?

I left a question on the Avid/MC Controllers forum and it has not been answered.
