DP7.24 MIDI setup with Roland Xp-50

Post by ghia »

Hey All... Looking for some help to make some "Small" steps !
Having some issues with my first attempt at using DP MIDI function to control a Roland Xp-50.
I'm running OS X 10.5.8 on a Dual 2.3 PowerPC G5 w/ 16 GB of Ram
I'm using a Midisport 8x8 and/or a 2x2. Both show up in the Audio MIDI Setup window. I have tried both with similar results.
Here is what I am experiencing...
The MIDI setup seemed to go fine in DP. I recognizes both MIDI interfaces and had a default setting for the Roland XP-50 which I used.
I started a new project and have several MIDI tracks created
I go to the Sequencer window and have the drop down boxes set as,
NOTES
XP-50 1
Blank
Insert
Take 1
Last box has a list of all of the Xp-50 patches (including the expansion cards)

I arm the track, and then hit record and play a passage on the Xp-50.
I can see the data being entered in DP but the sound source begins to feedback and finally
locks into total distortion. I need to remove one of the MIDI cables to stop it, and DP freezes.
The only way to recover is to power down XP-50 and force quit DP.
My first thoughts are that the XP-50 is not configured correctly.
The manual is pretty lousy and old and does not address using a DAW. It does show how to set up with an external sequencer but that uses just one cable from the out to the MIDI in of XP50.
Hoping someone might help lead me in the right direction. :)

Thanks!
Greg

I used an XP-30 for years in DP until 6 or 8 months ago without any problems or issues like that, strange.
Have you tried contacting Roland tech support? In my experience they're very helpful and knowledgable.

I did send them an email...have not heard back as of yet.
How/What parameters did you configure on your Xp-30? Did you set to "local off" in SYSTEM/MIDI menu? Anything special I need to do? The XP-50 is in exceptional condition and battery level is good..It sounds and works great on it's own..
Would love to start to explore the MIDI side..

Thanks!

If I remember correctly , yes local off
I'd call Roland tech support by phone, it's easier to converse and solve quickly.

:headbang:

Found instructions thru Roland to do a factory reset on the XP-50 and everything is now working great !! Doing edits in the MIDI window now and loving it......
You do have set to "local off" in SYSTEM/MIDI menu of the XP-50

Thanks

Tip : I can't remember the architecture of the XP-50 e.g. program or patch | multi | sequence or something like that , right ?

I'd suggest downloading a free app (I think) called MIDI Monitor …… it is a sys-ex app that lets you see what sys ex commands actually take place when you :
a) hit the single program/patch button
b) hit the 'Multi' button

Sometimes , I find myself wanting to use a 'Multi' vs a single program /patch in a MIDI track e.g. a layered string multi
So…… with MIDI monitor open , Hit the (single) patch/program button and write down what comes up
Similarly. do it for the 'Multi' button.
Now , In any DP MIDI track you want to use a single program, in the event list , insert the Sys ex command at the very top of the MIDI track, Do this also in another MIDI track for a 'Multi' patch and save. When ever you decide to use the Single or Multi mode, the sys ex command will always toggle to that mode before you choose the patch or multi. provided which track is toggled on (only one should be toggled on at any given time - not both) This always puts the machine in the correct mode I want to work in without having to reach over and make sure it's in the right mode. Also, make a notation in the comments column indicating if the track is a Single Patch mode track or a Multi patch mode track which you can easily see just by glancing over to that column.
I hope I explained this clearly.
Not sure if the terms Patch & Multi are used in this Roland keyboard , as I only have Korg machines and their terminology is Program and Combi.
Hope this helps - WPB52
