Here it is (I think). I have no way to verify it these days.

You can enter a line in Terminal that will make it always boot up into 64 bit:
sudo nvram boot-args=”arch=x86_64″

You should be able to reset things as follows:
sudo nvram boot-args=”"

sudo usually asks for your admin password and warns you that you are messing with the innards.

You can also edit this file;

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

…and change last string. Like below.

Kernel
mach_kernel
Kernel Flags
arch=x86_64
DP 11.34; 828mkII FW, micro lite, M4, MTP/AV USB Firmware 2.0.1

There is a way. But it is kind of technical. I see no reason why it wouldn't be fairly stable though - the trick being to use a developer tool and a tiny boot drive to do what amounts to a two stage boot - first stage doing a minimal boot into 32 bit mode which then loads the 64bit firmware required to reboot into the 64bit full OS.

My Pro is the 2,1 so should the time come, I'll either have to scrap it and upgrade (seems a shame, lots of life in the old girl and only two generations old) or more likely I'll do the hack. I'm upgrading the graphics card to the one recommended anyhow because I'm having issues getting my monitor to wake up.

While I"m at it I'm going to triple my ram (sure has gotten cheap!) to 24G and move my data to an external RAID array so moving CPUs should be a quick plug and go.

But I'm sticking with SL for now regardless. Just trying to preserve my options should something I want (DP 8?) require ML.
