VST plugin for mac and pc
new plugins: spatial maximizer, dynamic eq, 5band eq/comp

VST Mac is pretty damn dead.
But necessary for Windows. Sounds like a move to make the Mac and Windows version as similar as possible. ….i think the Spatial Maximizer mentioned above is new info too.

I just spoke to someone at MOTU who seemed more than a little irritated with my simple questions.

Here are the answers I got... No, PayPal will not be accepted as a form of payment. (That means that myself and other Canadian customers will be paying numerous dollars extra for this product than US folks).

There will be no advance ordering, so the product cannot be ordered until they are actually ready to ship the box. Again Canadian customers have to suffer the very inefficient bullcrap of border delays which will result in the product taking about 3 or 4 weeks to actually get here after it has been paid for (and extra customs, duty and taxes will likely be applicable). I don't remember if they have a faster and more expensive shipping option through Fedex or UPS, but if they do, duty, taxes and brokerage fees will still be applicable.

I offered a suggestion, to the irriation of the person I talked to, and it sounded like the person had been worn thin by constant calls asking "When will DP8 be released?" I did NOT ask that question... but I got the irritation just the same.

Sorry for the rant, but I have to say again... I can't believe that MOTU can't get on board with a dongle and a PDF manual so that all of this shipping ridiculousness could be a thing of the past. (And NO, this is not what I suggested to the irritated rep.)

It makes no sense in this day and age to do this product shipping the hard way, and to make people pay extra money in this economy and then have to wait several weeks longer because of a massive and inconvenient book (that hurts the hell out of my delicate fingers and is incredibly inconvenient to use) must be shipped to our physical addresses. What a waste of paper, resources and money.

I know that not everybody agrees with me. But I'm sure the majority do. We live in the age of the iPad. And THAT is where the MOTU manual belongs--as an eBook and not as another giant paperweight. Those customers who want to pay extra for a printed manual should be able to get one and THEY can wait the extra weeks to get their boxed edition.

So I guess the irritated response I got from the MOTU rep has rubbed off on me. My apologies if my irritation is now irritating any of you.

I've been non-pressing, quiet and polite for such a long time, and then I still get attitude when I try to find the answer to a simple question. Kind of annoys me.

The shipping has been a PITA in the past. Maybe things will improve this time around. There are better options available. I've been getting books and software from various places around the US over the past year and more recently the stuff has arrived in 3-4 days with small or no shipping fees. One large book from Minnesota arrived via Canada Post expedited parcel delivery, so there must be some level of cross border integration going on.

No one in Customer Support in any company at any time should sound annoyed or irritated with an existing or potential customer. A big part of their job is to not sound that way -- no matter what!

You should immediately ask to talk to a Supervisor if you're getting that kind of attitude, and if the Supervisor has an attitude ask for a Manager. If that doesn't work write a letter to the V.P. or President. Not an email but a real letter. Believe me, it changes things. Yes, it takes time, but many times it's the only way things get changed and service (and product) is improved for everyone. Speak out and speak up.

I understand your pain Zed but not all of us own an ipad or want that option.I'd also be unhappy if the physical manual was an additional charge,eventually an ipad formatted manual might make sense but I suspect there's more of us that don't use an iPad than you think.
Motu is a small company they obviously like the method of software delivery and protection they're using and from their perspective it must work for most users.
Unfortunately they can't please everyone.
I'm cautious with major updates even if I got DP8 the moment it was available I'd still probably wait for an update or some other users reports. The brokers fees and import delays suck but if I order something from Canada I will encounter the same problems.

The mail itself is becoming a problem. There was a time recently when I would order standard shipping and get things in two days. It's sort of like they found it cheaper to go ahead and send it than to find a way to delay it for 5 more days. Well, not anymore.

It seems the US Mail has entered into a relationship with UPS, FedEx, and possibly others. When they ship something across the country, they first send it to one of those carriers. There it gets sorted and shipped to the city in which you live. Then it gets transported back to the US Post Office, where it's sorted again and sent to the local station for delivery. Things that used to take two days are now taking closer to two weeks. Saving money for the post office? Well, I'm going to start specifying delivery by another company, just to avoid that charade. I'm happy to spend more money for shipping if that's what it takes, but I do not like the new USPO system. They finally found a way to make it take longer.

Meanwhile, I'm happy with DP's manual. I've always liked having it by my side when I need it, and believe it or not, I can find just about anything in it instantly. I'd rather turn to it than to keep a PDF loaded in the background. I like my computer not to have any other apps running when DP is on deck. I'll open Mail or Safari briefly to check something, but I close them again. I try not to leave them running when I go back to DP. So, I'm the odd one out, but I very much like having a physical printed-paper manual for DP.

It sounded like even though I wasn't asking, that this person answers the phone all day and gets asked the question constantly "When is DP8 going to be available?" I could understand how that would be irritating, even though it wasn't what I was after.

It is the higher ups at MOTU that are responsible for this situation, however. If they were more open with what's going on, and if Magic Dave or some other MOTU rep had answered my question about PayPal (which I have asked a couple of times on this forum) then I wouldn't even have placed the call.

I'm not a big fan of how the MOTU machine operates on numerous levels. I am much more inclined to write some snail mail about those specific issues than to complain about an employee who is worn thin by having to defend the no-commitment-to-the-release-date-of-DP8 all day long. They've created that problem themselves.

I don't have an iPad either. But I fully intend to get one sometime soon. It is the most sensible way to read eBooks and software manuals, as well as a host of other functions like making videos, taking photographs and even serving as a portable recording studio and for amp emulations, etc, etc. So many things. The usefulness of the iPad is a reality.

But I will happily view the PDF on my desktop until I have an iPad.

The same document that is taken to the printer to publish a physical copy of the book is the same document that can easily be turned into a PDF or converted to whatever format works best on an iPad. It isn't time consuming or complicated to make all formats available. Using a giant book as a copyright-protection scheme is ridiculous, in my view.

I'm willing to bet that they are not pleasing the majority on this point.

And how small can they be? Almost all of the plugin developers have figured out how to accept PayPal, print PDF documents and figure out a copyright protection scheme that can be implimented within minutes after an order is placed. It ain't rocket science. It's just sensible. ALL THE MORE REASON to do it if they are a "small" company. It could free up some resources for them (and might even reduce the number of complaints and questions their phone operators have to deal with).

But it's okay. I know you don't agree, so we don't have to argue the point further.

You are also super-human, and have reported things like being able to stay up for 3 days without sleep and continue to work productively. We're not all like that, though I sure wish I was. :-)

And fwiw, sometimes I have found things easily in that manual, and other times it has been a pain in the butt to find what I wanted, where a simple text search for what I was looking for would have quickly taken me to the right page(s) and allowed that section of the book to remain open on my second monitor while I attempted to put what I was reading into practise.

This kind of surprises me quite a bit. How much of your computer's resources could be gobbled up with Preview opened with a PDF on display? It has to be almost negligible and I cannot imagine for the life of me that this would affect DP's performance in the least.

I keep numerous applications open all day long while I run DP, and I have never noticed any difference in the efficiency of DP on occasions when I have tried to run it solo. Perhaps you have noticed something different, but this sounds to me like an old habit that may have been a smart habit several computers ago. Certainly a PDF or Safari opened should not make any difference unless Safari is streaming a video or something.

To all of you... I'm not trying to be contentious. I'm just saying. :surrender:

I rarely notice any difference after opening other apps. You're right; it's an old habit. There was a time when I didn't allow ANY other processes, not even desk accessories, to be opened when DP was running.

But I'll tell you where it makes a difference now. I often keep Ivory running in freestanding mode while working in DP. I use it to play lines and check scores to see if the recorded version is correct, and to help me figure out which takes I need to use. I prefer it outside of DP so that I'm not running a VI in what is otherwise an all-audio project. But if I open Mail and Safari, or other apps like Preview, I start getting clicking and poor response in Ivory. It doesn't mind being in the background to DP, but when those other apps get involved, it gets very grouchy.

As for being superhuman… I may have thought so at one time, but I've had my mortality handed to me on a turd platter, and I can tell you that age is a very real and vicious opponent who plays dirty and loves watching over-inflated egos fall. I'm quite regular-human, it turns out. [Sigh…] The reason I can find things in the manual is simply because I've looked so many times. I kinda know the book(s) now.

I have that old habit too. Even with a profoundly powerful computer now, I always think about it anyway. Actually Mail (if it's checking automatically) and Safari have a lot of background processes going on that I don't trust not to frag things up. I also use VE Pro and slave computers connected via ethernet, so going online while a full-blown DP session is on always makes me wonder if it gets affected, particularly if it gets sluggish or crashes.. it probably doesn't, and it's just my ignorance about computer processes that keeps me paranoid.. or is it? :wink:
