New Mac Pros from Apple...

It's been a really long day, so my level of reasoning and concentration is pretty far down, but this still popped into my head...(what's left of it!)

I wonder if the minimal "upgrades" and the dismissal of incorporating the new technologies, as mentioned above, and (probably) resulting slow sales will just give Apple a "legitimate" reason to discontinue Mac Pro production.

Hope not...such an elegant machine.

Pros are gonna be disappointed, not buy too many, and Mac will get bummed out about sales and it will become a self fulfilling prophecy, started by rumor, added to by lack luster product, and reinforced in a loop of mediocrity.

But if I am not mistaken, isn;t it a lot cheaper now to have a 12 core? How much did the previous versions of 12 core cost? What is the net savings for this versions 12 core if any?

The new 12-core is listed on Apple's site for $3799. Older 12-core prices vary. Until recently, Apple had two 12-core refurbs. One was in the mid $4000s and the other was well over $5k. Those apparently sold within the past week.

As of today, ebay's got at least one for almost $6k, but that includes a 20" display.

That's not to overlook other possible deals at lower prices from other sources, but for now it looks as if new *could be* cheaper.

I bought one of those 12 core (2.66ghz). They had exactly two in stock (the 2.66 and the 2.93). The machines were the same as what's on offer now save the fact that the new ones have 12G of ram and you can upgrade the video card to a more powerful (2 year old) ATI card. The machines were offered at a $1000 savings though.

The guy on the phone was very helpful and - if he is to be believed - said those machines come in small batches (onesy twosies) and don't sit around very long.

Instead of installing everything from scratch, I'm going to try using the Migration assistant to move over applications, accounts, support files etc. The experience so far has been pretty painless if not slow. Moving all data over via wireless is estimated to take 51 hours. Am in the final 16 hour stretch now.

51 hours of estimated computer time does mean 51 real time hours. Might be a lot less. Might be more. Good luck!

LOL, I keep checking in hoping I see a magical reduction in time, but it's been pretty consistent: ETA of 5am tomorrow or there abouts....
Sigh.
