UPDATE: tried a couple

1. Amarra: borderline malware...I was greeted with an unbelievable loud blast of white noise on start up...and they want to charge $99 for the "junior" version.

2. Fidelia: crashed on startup every time. GUI looked cool at least...

Alternatives to itunes?

Yes and No.
I replaced the itunes sound engine, with BitPerfect a $5 app in the app store.
It still uses the iTunes library as a database bypasses the iTunes sound engine & I feed into a Dac.
Sounds great and is very affordable,
noticeable improvement on the sound of iTunes.
There's other software in the market that will also replace the ITunes sound engine like Amarra, which I used in my last job and is a good engine,I neverc had issues with it crashing etc...
BitPerfect for me is a great cheap alternative solution.
