My Lion Experiment
Okay... I was impetuous and downloaded and installed Lion on my Mac Pro 1,1. It took me maybe an hour or two of working with it to immediately regret my decision. My older versions of Photoshop and Office were rendered useless and I can't afford to upgrade right now. Using other apps like Bento, I noticed some sluggishness. I did launch DP and it seemed to run okay, but I had to upgrade Nomad Factory plugs as a project that contained them would crash DP on opening.
I had screwed up though and not made a fresh backup via Carbon Copy Cloner since Dec. 31. Still losing only 5 days of stuff wasn't as bad for me as staying with Lion. Actually I got all my email back because messages were stored on the server so I didn't lose those. But for me, I'm staying on Snow Leopard until A) I have a faster machine someday and B) I can afford to upgrade Photoshop and Office and other apps.
It's a very subjective thing, but I can say for sure that I'm not going to go to Lion so long as I own the Mac Pro 1,1. My stuff still works and will keep working and I don't know if many apps will REQUIRE Lion. I am bummed about not having Photostream and other features, but I got by just fine without them.

Re: Ny Lion Experiment
I've found the Lion runs pretty smooth on my Mac Pro 1,1. (Which now is pretty much a Mac Pro 2,1 since I upgraded my processors). But I believe I have a better grephics card that you in mine, maybe that's a bit more important i Lion than in previous versions?
How did the FCPX thing go, btw? Did you get it to work or get your money back?

Well I don't know if it was your processor upgrade that made the difference or that I only have 5GB RAM in my machine, but it didn't feel as responsive in some apps. But the kicker was having to upgrade more apps than I thought I'd have to. Just don't have a "need" for Lion right now.

Re: Ny Lion Experiment
Because I don't have an iPhone or an iPad I don't have any need for the Cloud at the moment or the syncing with my iMac. I am worried about losing my MobileMe e-mail address and all the stuff that goes with that, but even so, nothing I have read of all the comments by users has convinced me that it is worth transferring to Lion for any reason to do with a better operating system. I really don't want to upgrade software like Office, or anything else that I use, when I don't know if it will still work with Lion.
Previous OS updates have been worth having for all the new features. I don't see anything that is worth me having that will improve my workflow with Lion. Of course £20 is not bad compared to previous OSX upgrades which were about £90. But like many mac users there is that fear of falling behind - and in the past I was several years behind and all the new things happening were a constant source of frustration (internet, digital audio etc.).
But this time I am not so sure. Yes - apps will update and only work with Lion in the future. But currently the internet works, I can do stuff on my iMac we only dreamed of 15 years ago or needed to be a millionaire. If I was an iPhone and iPad junkie with a need to sync up with my desktop so I could organise my fantastic social life with my thousands of virtual friends (ho ho), then no doubt Lion would be a must. But until I see a real need and desperately need a new software update that I can't live without and which only works with Lion, I think I can stick with Snow Leopard for a while yet. I can live without MobileMe, and am happy to keep my music out of the Cloud and backed up on my hard drives where I can see them and no-one else can.
That may make me a Luddite yet again - before it was because I couldn't shell out for a new mac and new peripherals and software. This time its for practical reasons. I will keep watching and am really happy that people keep posting on this subject as I will need convincing that Lion is worth updating to.

I'm waiting until I see some reason or advantage to move down to Lion. SL is just peachy.

Same here. Super smooth. When DP goes 64 bit (and all plugs), I suspect it will coincide with a Lion upgrade. Otherwise things are as stable as ever. I'm staying put for now.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:I'm waiting until I see some reason or advantage to move down to Lion. SL is just peachy.

Same here. The 32 bit limit is not a big deal for me. If DP 8 has a lot of useful new features, and it needs Lion, that would do it, but otherwise I could be at 7.24/10.6.8 for a very long time.

Re: My Lion Experiment
Well my take on it is that if I did have a faster Mac I might go for it. But even then, I am familiar with older versions of my software and if it's not music related, I don't really want to be bothered to upgrade to a newer version of something that I have to learn my way around, when I can do everything I need in the current version. Someday, I'll have to climb aboard, but I just have to stay back on Snow Leopard for now.

Yep, not upgrading until I buy a new machine next summer. Plus I can afford to upgrade Office 04 to whatever it's at now. No reason to slow this 4+ year old machine down.
