Gift ideas for a drummer?
I signed up for the anonymous gift exchange deal for a lark and I drew a 19 year old college student who is a drummer, likes jazz and Steve Vai (discovered Zappa existed about 6 months ago) and has about a zillion highly diverse selections listed on his last.fm account.
So what makes a good gift for a drummer? As a guitarist I always just buy the cheapie black nylon guitar straps because I'm cheap, but I appreciate it if someone gives me a really pretty strap. Something I wouldn't buy myself but is nice to have.
What sort of things like this exist for drummers?

Re: Gift ideas for a drummer?
In your communications, have there been any hints or clues? A special brand of sticks? A new stick case?
It need not even be anything directly related to computers or electronics. A drummer tee-shirt or a baseball cap are gifts that keep on giving in their own ways.
What about a mug?
What about a drum set clock?
For the beer drinking drummer?
A license plate?
The same sorts of things could be found iconizing Vai and Zappa, I'm sure.

Gift ideas for a drummer?
I'd go for a hand percussion utility stand.

This will get used and last for years! I bought one a few years ago and use it for lots of gigs.

A bib - to catch the drool.
[Bad drummer joke]
How can you tell if a drummer's stool is level?
The drool comes out evenly from both sides of his mouth...
[Sorry to all the drummers out there who can read]

Cheers,

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

Re: Gift ideas for a drummer?
My housemate is a drummer... a VERY GOOD drummer... and it's always a challenge each year to find the right gift, but I haven't gone wrong yet.
Last year, I bought him a DVD by a well-known speed metal drummer, that went into all sorts of cross-stick techniques. He was thrilled.
I was originally going to buy him drummer gloves, a drum throne, or something like that. But what I found is that drummers are quite particular about that stuff: a gift card is better.
Anyway, if the gift is specific and not a gift card, I highly recommend stuff along the lines of tutorial videos by drummers that are likely to inspire this player.
Having said that though, a good metronome is a grand idea -- though not the traditional non-electronic type, as they aren't steady enough (it has to do with gravity, amongst other things -- especially at faster tempi). This is true of even the best ones (I got rid of mine).
I recommend the new version of the one from Peterson Strobe Tuners, which is the most versatile on the market today. If it's out of budget, maybe next time, or maybe pool with someone else who is involved in the gift-giving.

All in humor:
Q: What's the difference between a drummer and shoe inserts?
A: The shoe inserts serve to buck up the feet.
In fairness:
Q: Why do keyboard players always hang outside the stage door?
A: They can't figure out when to come in.

Re: Gift ideas for a drummer?
Q: How is a drum solo like a sneeze?
A: You can tell it's coming, but you can't do anything about it.
A woman goes to the doctor, who has the results of a recent blood test;
Doc: "I'm sorry to say it's not good news, you only have 6 months to live."
Woman: "Oh Dear, that's terrible. What can I do?"
Doc: "Well, you could try marrying a drummer"
Woman: "Will that make me live longer?"
Doc: "No, it'll still be 6 months, but it will seem like a lot longer".

Lots of stuff and a recently acquired ability to stop buying
