Adding Memory problem MacPro

Post by wylie1 »

I'm trying to add another 2x2gig chips to my MacPro3.1 2008.
Right now it has 2x2 in it but when I add the next 2x2 in the second riser on reboot the slots show empty.
When I pull the old chips out and just put the new chips in my Mac won't boot.
However I only left them in a couple of minutes and someone just told me I may have to leave it a little longer for it to do its config thing to see if it will boot.
The chips I'm putting in are Kingston KTA-MP800K2/2G and are the same specs as whats in there now.
The recommended chips from curcial.com are CT774462 and are also the identical specs.
If the Kingston's are bad so be it but I don't want to order more chips from crucial with the same specs and run into a similar problem.
I'm trying to figure out why the slots would show empty even though there's chips in there?
Is there some kind of diagnostic tool I can run to help me solve this?

Are you putting the new chips in the same riser/slots. If they're in exactly the same position as the chips that work, they're most likely defective. If you've got them in a different position, try moving them around. Just thinking out loud here. Don't know if I helped. :?
The other possibility is that you have a bad riser. What happens if you put the known good chips in riser 2 and the new ones in riser 1?

The chips that where in there where in opposing slots Riser A1 & B1
So my next chips would go in A2 & B2 thinking the opposing slots would be the matching pairs.
But now I'm finding out that the matching pairs go in A1 & A2 then the new chips would go into B1 & B2.
Its taken me about 3 hours of poking around to find this vid
http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos ... _mem_hd_h/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I thought because you have 2 matching Riser cards the matching chips would match the opposing card but it looks like that is not the case.
I'm on my way to the studio now to give it a try I'll post back.

Well I followed the config in the OWC vid and it worked like a charm.
I never would figured that pattern out on my own based on the way the original chips were install.
So I'm back to rock & rolling with another 8gig on the way today.
No more beach balls :D
Thanx for chiming in.

Glad you got it worked out. I hadn't even thought to mention the matched pair placement. I thought you had that part sorted out. Sorry if I sent you down a wrong path. Just glad you're up and running.

No Problem.
What started this whole thing for me was this thread http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... =9&t=48064" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
When I add an 8Pre my system started choking.
But life is good again :)
