828MK3 FW issue

Hi:

All of a sudden, my iMac isn't recognizing my 828MK3. I believe it is something I may have caused, because I took the 828 to a remote gig in a small rack enclosure, with the FW cable plugged in (stupid, I know), and I think a power strip i had in the back may have been moving around and caused the damage.

828 still works in standalone, and I also reinstalled the drivers just in case. Nothing.

Anybody shipped stuff to MOTU for repairs? Curious as to your experiences.

I was experiencing a similar issue with my MkII last week. Turned out I had an unpowered external hard drive on the second Firewire port on my Mac. Once I disconnected the drive, all was well with the 828.

Thanks! There's nothing on my second Fw imac input, though. I also tried switching to a 400 cable, (forgot to mention using an 800 cable in my OP) but it still doesn't work.
Created a tech link with MOTU. We'll see what happens!

Hey AnthonyS!

Did you find the problem? I'm having the same issue with an 828 mk3 hybrid. The computer won't recognize it in neither FireWire nor USB mode. The unit still works as standalone.

I've swapped cables, computers, voltage (110-220), you name it, still no luck.

Anything?

Yes I did find the problem. Sorry for not posting the results. I contacted MOTU and sent the unit back. For $99 they gave me a refurb. I guess that's how they do things now, but I'm happy with the results....

Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought. Send it in for repair. I'm guessing it has to be a problem with the hybrid card (FW / USB) since it works as standalone.

Always check to make sure your FW ports are working before blaming the unit. I had a defective hub that caused FW to go down - naturally, it wouldn't recognize my 828mkII.

Resetting the PRAM brought it back to life every time. It took me a while to ID the hub as the culprit.
