Drum Machine Software?

...I know of so many groups, or "Acts" that rely on Drum machines...

That is so sad.

Up until very recently, Depeche Mode toured with no drummer and their show was anything but sad. Sometimes it is appropriate, especially if there's a lot of sound design involved in the drum work. The only other option, which I did, is use an electric kit. It's a lot of work to do right though.
