QT 7.6.6 can be downloaded from the Apple support site
Cool. I downloaded 7.7 and it wouldn't install because of 10 being present. That's great news for me. Nothing converts file types with the amount of control that I need - I get some from other studios that must be converted before they will load into DP. And yes, I have a Pro license - about the best $30 I ever spent on software.
I've never bothered with Spaces, Time Machine, Expose, ...
Time Machine should have been part of OS 8, imo. I have little sympathy for those professionals who don't use it and lose data. I just don't accept "I don't like it" as an excuse.

Regarding most of the other gimmicky OS tricks, frankly I agree with you. No idea who they were designed for - wasn't me.

I do like the new scrolling very much, however. I have limited mobility in my right arm and nearly none in my left (and I was left handed). So for me it's a godsend. Yea, it took me a day or two to get used to it but I see it as a major improvement and allows me to do many things easily that were a real pain (literally - physical pain) with a mouse or track ball.

Here is a link for QT 7.6.6. Click on Download Intel to get the right version.

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7964/apple-quicktime" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Installed into the Utilities folder and works perfectly. It even found my Pro registration from wherever it is stashed.

Thanks!

Glad you found 7.6.6. I hadn't heard of 7.7.

On the "gimmicks" -- they're not gimmicks. They're how mobile computers work. Little touch screens need these features. We're getting them on the Mac because it's being developed for the growth mobile markets, and ported to the mature PC markets. Apple, MS and HP all realized at the same time that PCs are not where the action is. They'll all be developing for mobile devices and porting to PCs. If you think Lion is annoying, wait til you see Windows 8.

Brave new world.

If you search for QT 7 on Apple's web site, that's what you get as it was the last version for OS 10.5. Searching for 7.6.6 got me the version that worked.

Just reporting, Lion's Screen Sharing does not work with OS 9. I use my OS 9 PowerMac occasionally to run Oasys-PCI. OS X Screen Sharing up thru Snow Leopard allowed me to operate the PowerMac without its monitor/keyboard/mouse. In Lion, Screen Sharing says something about operating system not supported. For general stability reasons I downgraded back to Snow Leopard, so I have Screen Sharing back.

HA! I have a Mac 7600 with OS 8.6 sitting in a closet with my old music on it. It's all been transferred to MIDI files, but I keep the machine and about once evey 3 or 4 years turn it on. Still works. Studio Vision Pro is... was a fine music app! :)

I am keeping an old G4 for the occasional need to resurrect an ancient file. I have it as a dual boot 10.4 / 9.2.

I recycled my perfectly working SE last year.

'k, I'm not too worried about OS9, but does anyone happen to know if Screen Sharing between a Mac running Lion and one running SL is still working? I'm thinking about updating my MBP to Lion and keeping my main desktop/DP rig on SL.

ALSO: I'm curious about the general stability of DP with Lion on MBPs. I only use my laptop for recording audio and audio playback. No VIs or mixing - no plugins even. In SL DP has been bullet proof for these basic tasks (virtually zero crashes!). I'm hoping it's equally stable in Lion doing these things. …the playback situations are for live sound installations, dance performances etc. and therefore need be rock-solid.

Even better, can anyone give us one legitimate good reason to even switch to Lion?

Yeah, I saw it on a friend's computer and I was tempted just for the flashy stuff, but can't see that I have a real need and I have to decide if Unisyn is something I can do without.

You get "simple" all the time. I think what you really want is "simplicity".

Screen sharing between Lion and Snow Leopard and Leopard works fine. I haven't tried controlling a Lion screen from Leopard, but all other combinations are good.

DP 7.24 on my MBP running OS X 7.2 is also fine. I use it to do edits on current projects when I'm travelling. I typically have it looping a few bars while I tweak things and move the lopping points around. I've had it playing back under these conditions for hours. It's at least as stable as my iMac setup under 10.6.8. and G5 running 10.5.8, although each setup has different plugin sets.

Lion itself had a few flaky bits, but the last of those seem to have been cleared up with the Safari update a couple of days ago.

Having said that, DP doesn't benefit at all from Lion features, so unless there are other apps you need Lion for, I wouldn't bother.
