so what size buffers are you using for M5.
does 512 cut it or do you need to go lower for
latency free performance? how much lower?
Is it even a consideration for a G4 dual 800?

IMO, 512 buffer is workable, but the latency is definitely apparent. If you can tolerate a little "mushiness," then it might work for you
I tend to do my MIDI work at 256, then bump up to 1024 once all's tracked to audio to mix. I'm on a dual 2 G5, FWIW.

256 should work, as long as I don't have too many things going.

If you run at 256, how many VI instances can you get away with? I'm on a dual 2.5 G5. For the longest time I was using live MIDI input at 1024, and now I feel stupid for doing it that way for so long. I bumped down to 512, and everything is still very smooth. I guess I should try 256, boy do I hate latency.

This is a hard question to answer since different VIs have different CPU and RAM requirements.Originally posted by RhythmRmixd:

As you know, the big reason to use a lower buffer setting like 256 is to minimize latency when playing.
On my set-up (G5 dual 2), 256 gives me good response. But it can tax the CPU if my composition is orchestrated with many, many heavy VIs. Still, I almost never have to bounce my VI tracks to audio until I've MIDI-ed all of the parts. So, I get a enough VI headroom out of my set-up.

As of right now I'm only using Battery 2 and Machfive as my VI's, and usually only one instance of each. Performance is great for me as well right now, my audio performance monitor is only in the 10% range of CPU resources being used. I would imagine I have some headroom to work with. I'll do some experimenting.
