preamp recommendations

Post by vaughandy »

Hi out there,

I have a motu 8pre and am doing some recording using an SM7b. The sm7b sounds great, but being a dynamic mic, has a pretty low output. The onboard preamps for the 8pre sound good, but i'm considering getting an additional preamp, probably tube, to boost my signal a bit more. any recommendations as to pre-amps that sounds good through the 8pre?

I love my LA-610. Never used it with a SM7b though.
For something cheaper and also completely different, I'm curious about the PRE-73:

I love my Neve 4081. It makes my cheapass mikes sound like really good ones. :D

So much depends on your budget. What are you looking to spend? If you're thinking about a tube pre, I'm guessing you are after that tube character. I've been leaning away from tubes lately. It's getting harder and harder to find good replacement tubes any more. I think their days are numbered.

If you're after something special and extremely versatile, take a look at TC Gold Channel. I think some may go for decent prices in some places, for it may be discontinued, or has already been.
BTW, to my ears, it's in the straight wire and un-colored park, but extremely articulated and revealing. Great on my dynamics and ribbons.
