patch names in General MIDI virtual instrument

Post by lehrman »

We're using M'Audio's "Key Rig" in our lab, which is a General MIDI virtual instrument (along with a piano, organ, and analog synth module). The GM module responds to patch changes according to the GM map, which is a great teaching tool. However, in the Patch lists in DP, I can't see the GM list, only "Patch 1", "Patch 2", etc.
How do I get DP to link to the General MIDI.midnam file when I have a MIDI track assigned to Key Rig? Or is there another way to do this?
Thanks!

.

Try the bundles window, and click on the proper tab. You can find out how to do this in the manual (Bundles window).

If it doesn't work, perhaps you can try doing it with Cherry Picker.

http://www.alterspective.com/cherrypicker/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But I'd try the bundles window first. You will be able to find a ton of MidNam files there.

Try This
http://www.motunation.com/forum/view" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... =noize+dls
NoizeMaker has a complete midnam file for the patch list & banks of the DLS

BTW Fernando, I'm not sure of what the bundles window has to do with the midnam? I may have missed something?

I was having trouble setting my JV-2080's expansion cards in DP. I wanted to be able to see all the patch names in the lists.
I went to the Bundles window and there's a tab there called MIDI Devices. That's where I found the Roland Expansion Card patches "template".
I had used CherryPicker to set them, but when I found out about this Bundles tab I realized I could've saved lots of time. As easy as clicking a couple of things.

Perhaps he can find the settings he needs for his synth patches in there too (it comes with MANY, if I remember correctly).

But you are right, it's not that he will mess with the midnam files in there. Hopefully he won't have to. Sorry for the confusion :)

There is no instrument in the Bundles window that corresponds to my virtual instrument. The only instruments that exist there are hardware instruments connected to my MIDI Time Piece.
I can create a new instrument in the Bundles window called "Key Rig-1" and tell DP it's a General MIDI instrument. I can then assign a track to that instrument. However, data on that track doesn't go to the virtual instrument, which is also "Key Rig-1". So I have two instruments with the same name, one of which plays but doesn't have patch names, and the other of which has patch names but doesn't play.
How do I convince DP that the real "Key Rig-1"--the one that actually addresses the plug-in--is a GM instrument?

I saw something on this a while ago and if I remember correctly (which is rare these days) someone copied the General MIDI.midman file to the Default Names.midnam file as some kind of workaround. Keep a good copy of the Default Names.midnam in case this is way off base.

That sounds like a good idea, but I don't see the Default Names.midnam file anywhere. There used to be a folder called "Default Names" in the old FreeMIDI under OS9, but it's nowhere to be found in OS X.
The problem isn't that I don't have a good General MIDI midnam file; it's that Key Rig won't link to it.
As for NoizeMaker, that link doesn't work. What is NoizeMaker and how do I get to it, and if I do find the file, where does it go so Key Rig can find it?

For some reason that folder was missing from my home studio machine, but was there on my school machines!
The suggestion to hack the "Default Patches.midnam" file was a good one. But it's not just the name on the "General MIDI.midnam" files that has to be changed: you also have to go in and change a line of code from <StandardDeviceMode Name="General MIDI" > to <StandardDeviceMode Name="Default Names" >.
I HATE dealing with midnam files, especially since they're all over the damn place. I miss OMS (and even FreeMIDI)! And when is Apple going to get it together to make MIDI studio configurations actually editable in a meaningful way?
Thanks to everyone for your help!
