Have any of those ethnic libraries. I hear what sounds like an indian tabla drum and a tambourine in there. And some big booming file type drum hits. Then a white noise type swoosh periodically. Something that sounded like castinets too.

Seems like something one could do with Ethno and other VIs that have "world" style loops, etc.

Thanks James

yeah I've kind of copped the rhythms OK I think. It's really the particular sound of those booming hits that I can't get. I have quite a good selection of ethnic drums and I've tried taikos, and toms with both sticks and brushes but can't get that kind of 'in your face' harshness, everything I use sounds too polite.

Hmmm... I don't know. Maybe pile a bunch of gated reverb onto the taiko? Did you get in on the SampleTank group buy? They had some interesting stuff in their World Loops. In "Big Drum Ensemble" there's a preset called "104_Powwow1_2b_QVA" that might be good. I imagine this is where one of those really heavy, cinematic drum VIs like Storm Drum or one of those things comes in handy. I don't own that unfortunately. :(

Yep there are some good possiblities in the SampleTank World Loops, but without a doubt Quantum Leap Storm Drums 2 could take you all the way there pretty quickly. That would be your best bet if you can afford it (and it is 50% off until July 31/10 making it only $197.50 using coupon code "ANNIVERSARY").

Check out the audio demos here and be sure to listen to the one called "Hellraiser Brigade" for starters:

If you can't afford it, I think that convolution reverb is the most important ingredient if you have some ethnic percussion to work with.

EDIT > Here is a link (with the same audio demos) to a site selling the product in Aussie dollars. Not sure if you can get the 50% discount from them, however:

Thanks guys. Yeah can't get the discount from the local guy, bit of a shame. Might still order it from the US anyhow, seems like a good deal.

Still, those drums sound too hifi compared to what my client wants. I'm going to try the gated reverb as suggested.

James is correct about the tabla sound.

Actually here is what's happening: The tabla set consists of two drums - a high pitch drum(dhayan) and a low pitch drum (Bhayan). The rhythmic structures you hear in the music are played by the dhayan. Playing technique involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds. The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure on the Bhayan in a sliding motion so that the pitch is changed during the sound's decay.

Interestingly enough the Bhayan is not used for the low sliding sound but another instrument called the Pakhwaj. The skin is loosened but the pitch is raised. This obviously can only be done manupulating samples because in reality you can't raise the pitch by loosening the drum skin :-)

The tamborine sound that you hear is actually the sound of "ghongroos". It is a thick band that has small bells attached to it. These bands are worn around the ankles by Indian classical dancers during performances.

Hope this helps

You give me too much credit. I was guessing maybe a taiko drum... not tabla. I usually think of tabla as higher pitched?
