UltraLite mk3 not powering on

Post by Michikawa »

Hi!

I'm having occasional and random troubles getting Ultralite mk3 power on. I have it connected to my computer via firewire cable but every now and then when I try to power it on by holding the power knob, nothing happens. Not sure if it is Windows 7 driver related or the Ultralite hardware itself, but usually when I reboot the windows and try to push the power knob at a bit different time, it finally powers on.

It is not have been a show stopper so far, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had any occasional troubles getting the power on and what could have been the cause for this kind of "random" problem?

EDIT:

The totally mysterious thing is that when I try to power it up by removing the firewire cable and plugging the power cable and the usb cable, it still doesn't work, but when I remove the usb cable and power cable and put back the firewire cable, voilá, on the next try it powers up. I'm totally at loss here, what is going on?

When you turn it on, are you holding the main volume knob for a while? If you press and hold the knob, I don't think the interface will turn on until you release the knob. If you press and release the knob quickly, it should power on every time.

Yes, I'm holding it for a while and I've tried many different timescales from 0,5 second to a few.

It seems that the trouble is somehow related to firewire connection - when the box doesn't power up, it seems to correct itself when I unplug the firewire cable, replug it and try to power up again. No idea why.

Do either of the FireWire ports look damaged or bent? I've seen interfaces freeze while they're booting up if a FireWire cable has been plugged in upside-down.

It might be broken. You should probably contact MOTU. If the UltraLite mk3 is within the warranty period, I think they'll fix it for you at no charge.

Yeah. Motu support replied the unit has a problem that warrants repair.

A weird thing tho... today it suddenly powered on again. Have been playing for 1hr now with it. I have checked everyday to see if it worked again. Now it does, but i think i should send it in anyway. This aint so reliable

Hi!

I've been experiencing similar problem here. I reinstalled my ultralite mk3 driver on my PC. To complete the installation, I plugged the firewire cable and turned the hardware on but it didn't respond. I checked the connection and realized that I plugged the cable into the ultralite's socket the wrong way (the flat side of both firewire plug & socket were not aligned). I then changed the plug's position, inserted it into the same socket, turned the hardware on, got the power back and noticed that the green lcd screen showed every information as usual at every start up. The only problem is, the driver installation didn't continue. It seemed that my PC didn't detect my ultralite. I then turned it off and plugged the firewire cable into the other socket, turned it on, and the installation continued normally. Everything's working properly except now the other socket is not functioning. Does this mean that i've damaged the socket? Fortunately, despite the damage, I'm still able to use it for recording & editing without any flaws. Since I'll still be using my Ultralite-mk3 to work on some unfinished projects for a couple of months to go, I really can't send it to US to get it fixed immediately. Right now I really need to know whether the damage on that firewire port will spread to other components or not. Until now I only need one port to work with since I'm not planning to daisy chain the unit to other MOTUs. Thank y'all in advance.

I very much doubt it mate but your best chance of obtaining an answer with greater certainty is via MOTU. No one here can be 100% certain.

I have, mate. But still got no answer for that question. Thank you so much for your respond.
