File Hosting?

Post by Phil O »

Just curious as to what folks suggest for a good free file hosting site. I use Photobucket for my avatar, but they don't support audio formats. I'm just looking to put up some audio files for this forum.

Phil, I guess you're out of luck. No suggestions seem to be forthcoming. :)

I am curious too, as right now I throw them on my own hosting space where they sit indefinitely, or until this board goes belly up, that is. Ha ha.

Phil, do you have your own website? If so, that would be an option.

If not, and you're looking for something free, something like Google's Blogger http://www.blogger.com/features might work for you, or if you have a MobileMe account, you can use iDisk (which is great because it integrates with OSX).

Dropbox is just awesome! I share files with studios and bands through Dropbox now. It's excellent.

I don't think this is a big issue, but Dropbox also puts an app named "Growl" on your computer that seems to want to update itself regularly.
Google Growl and you'll see where the developers frown on this unauthorized software install.

Just FYI...

You can uninstall or disable automatic updates for Growl (in System Prefs) if you like.

Personally I love Growl... I have Growl notifications running in some of my Quickeys workflows and I find them really handy. I also like the notifications from Dropbox so I know when a file is available. Big fan here.

And Mail, safari, Cyberduck,... even Hardware growler installed over here, I´d encourage DP to put the background processing window for example through Growl´s paces. Other respectable apps do, so I´d say there´s not such fear.It installs a full pref pane in OSX, and to me that´s a good sign.
I´ve monitored the CPU usage of Growl with 2 different boot drives , and I´d say it´s not noticeable in my setup.

Bear in mind that you don´t necessarily have to use dropbox software, it works just as well if you use the web interface, simply it´s not as convenient. As for the soft, it does take some some occasional resource, so you might as well leave it off while working in a session and switch it on when you drop something. And it´s awesome when you remember you dropped something you want while working in another comp of yours. Go check, it´s there, no download time.

Right now I get by with Mediafire's free version to send mixes to clients. I'm also looking for better options.
