Ever had to replace a power supply?

Post by blazingrythm »

My iMac G5 (about five years old) won't power up. I know it's not the power cord.

Has anyone here replaced the power supply and is it difficult?

There's a pdf with instructions I found on Google but I thought I'd check here first.

The fan noise was loud often before this happened.

Perhaps replacing the fan at the same time might be in order.
Any tips???

Thanks in advance for helping me.

I'm absolutely not a repair guy, but just FYI...I had a G4 power supply go out a year ago or so and found one on eBay. A friend installed it. Took about 30 minutes.

The point is that there is an internal fuse in the PS. You could check that first with a multi meter (unplugged!).

However, if indeed it is the fuse, it blew for a reason. Could be a one time thing or a definite problem with the PS.

There's a guy in Austin that trades in refurbished supplies. If I can find his contact info, I'll get back to you.

I haven't heard back yet. He may not be in the PS biz anymore.

However an eBay search pulled up lots of G5 power supplies.

(He's no longer a seller on eBay, either.)

If I do hear anything, I'll get back to you...

I checked out your friend Buzz and he didn't have the power supply I needed so I remembered having $75.00 credit at a computer repair place, ordered a new power supply $99.00 plus CA tax, had the repair place remove it, and will bring that to the place I ordered the new one for exchange and will pick up the new one to have the repair place install it.

Thanks for your help.
I hope that when I bring it home tomorrow I can continue working in DP to finally put the finishing touches on my new CD.

Kind regards to all who helped,
Robert

In the end I got a power supply locally and found that the logic board was fried too.
So I bought a used iMac for $300 and had my original hard drive swapped out.
It works fine and I can return the power supply but now I have to authorize and activate almost all my plugins. Ugh!
The fan noise is gone now, shhhhhh...hear anything? Me neither.
The vents on the one that went down were clogged and heat destroyed it.
Make sure you regularly clean those air vents out with an old tooth brush and a can of Dust Off.
